Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 14

1

Palermo and Italy goalkeeper Marco Amelia said saving Ronaldinho's penalty kick was "like playing Playstation". Now I bet tons of clubs will be getting calls from FIFA '09 addicts saying they should get a trial because they are good at saving penalties on Playstation. Roundup after the jump.

Fiorentina 4-2 Udinese: Come-back Kings Wearing Violet on Saturday (Serie A Matchday 13)

0
The perfect example of "a match of two halves", Saturday's Fiorentina vs. Udinese also delighted Serie A fans with a big deluge of goals, courtesy of some often shaky defending (on both sides) but more so of the great prideful reaction by Cesare Prandelli's boys. One goal down early in the game, La Viola looked [. Click to continue reading...

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 12 (plus Serie B and other news)

2

Roma, languishing in the relegation zone before the derby, took on Lazio, who are flying high in the upper echelons of the table. Roma needed a victory over their rivals to kick-start their season and boost morale, while Lazio were looking to confirm themselves as a side to be reckoned with this season.

Juventus-Genoa and Coppa Italia round-up

0

Because of the Italian National Rugby Team playing a game at the Stadio Olimpico in Torino on Sunday, Juventus-Genoa had to be played today. Juventus have been playing well as of late and have been led by the inspirational play of Alessandro Del Piero. Genoa have proved a tricky opponent this season and have seemed almost unbeatable at home.

Baggio speaks about calcio

2

Since retiring from the calcio world, Roberto Baggio has dedicated himself to his family and has stepped out of the limelight, preferring to live the normal life. Every now and again he'll give the odd interview, and when he does it's always interesting to see what the most skillful player Italy has produced in the last 25 years has to say about the current state of the calcio world.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 11

Can anyone tell me what type of performance enhancing drug Alessandro Del Piero is taking right now? (Juventus fans don't jump on my back, that was my attempt at humor). Another inch perfect free kick, and on his 34th birthday to boot. Serie A results after "il salto" (the jump).

Prospects and Parity Ahead for 2010 Champions League

0
As intriguing as the current edition of the Champions League may be, there's a chance the 2009-2010 tournament could be one of the strangest, parity-rich events in football history. Seems someone has taken the snowglobe that is European football, given it a good shake and the flakes aren't landing where people expect. Click to continue reading...

Football video: Jose Mourinho walks out on Italian TV interview

8
The Special One is now the Stroppy One (or was he always?) If there's one thing Jose Mourinho doesn't like it is criticism of Jose Mourinho. So when Italy's media wanted to give the Inter Milan boss a dressing down over his celebratory hushing of Udinese's fans, it all got a bit too much for Mourinho. Click to continue reading...

WCR Weekend Soccer Television Schedule - 8/9 November

5
With three matches involving a pair of WCR Top 25 Clubs, this weekend's choice for Match of the Weekend was not an easy one. Actually the tough decision came down to two. Normally, a matchup between two of England's big four is a non-brainer. This week, a rejuvenated Manchester United plays a slumping Arsenal in such a matchup. Click to continue reading...

Daily Calcio News and Notes - 11/4/08

1

Here's what I found interesting after reading various calcio news sites today:

-First, we have another managerial change in Serie A. Chievo haven't won since the first week of the season and manager Beppe Iachini has been sacked. Taking his place will be Domenico Di Carlo, who was in charge of Parma until March of last season.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 10

0

Wow can you believe we're already at Giornata 10? I feel like Serie A was just starting just yesterday. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly Milan-Napoli. Napoli have been the surprise of the campaign so far, led by young starlets Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marek Hamsik, and Fabiano Santacroce, and playing excellent, attractive football.

Europe’s Unexpected Table Leaders

7
If you've looked at the tables across Europe, you might find yourself doing double takes to make sure that is the name you saw up there above everyone else. Serie A Team Of The Week

0
This week's Serie A Team Of The Week was a tough choice and came down to two teams.  Both teams won in their European matches and won their Serie A games as well.  Taking into consideration the results, opposition, and standings a winner has been decided.  Remember that the TOW played matches and/or made headlines from Oct. The Time For Instant Replay Has Come.

3
Italian referees could use some damage control PR today, after managing to royally fuck up two games. In Palermo-Fiorentina, Alberto Gilardino - who is quite hot at the moment so we can maybe forgive their assumptions he'd magically huffed and puffed the ball into the net - scored with what appeared to be his hand. WCR Best Clubs in the World - Udinese On Top Edition

4

I'm almost afraid to post the WCR Top 25 this week because I know there is going to be nothing but disagreement.  The worst part is that most of it will be justified.  Some of it won't be, however, so I hope people read before they abuse me.  How can Udinese be number one?  Unfortunately, it's not because it is the best club in the world, even though it officially is this week.

Heurelho Gomes’ Uefa Cup cock-up for Tottenham against Udinese

3
Paul Robinson: allow yourself a wry smile When your team is going through a bad patch it is good to know that you have a reliable keeper between the sticks. UEFA Cup Group Stage: Three Out of Three for Serie A (Matchday 1)

2
Good operation for Italy on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Cup Group Stage. Indeed, out of the three Serie A teams still left in the competition, all of AC Milan, Udinese, and Sampdoria were victorious, achieving wins over Heerenveen (3-1), Tottenham (2-0), and Partizan Belgrade (2-1) respectively. Not only that, but Thursday night was special [. Click to continue reading...

Is Spurs’ Heurelho Gomes Just a Brazilian Paul Robinson?

4
Didn't Tottenham Hotspur replace Paul Robinson because he was prone to horrendous gaffes? If so, were any of them worse than today's UEFA Cup shocker from Spurs' current keeper Heurelho Gomes? The first touch was bad enough, but Gomes at least recovers in time. The smart thing at that point would be to boot it clear. Click to continue reading...

The Team That Performs Yearly Miracles…

0

In the current calcio world of teams that are constantly undergoing financial troubles, that jump between Serie A and Serie B, that get relegated and never come back, that have crazy owners who fire managers left and right, that have locker room problems, there is one club that defies all of these qualities and performs miracles every year.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 6 (Plus Serie B + National Team Call-ups!)

0

At the end of the 6th Giornata we still saw surprises. Inter is top of the table, but they share a place with Lazio and Udinese, two squads who have been impressing in this start of the season. Both clubs are putting in good performances and don't look like calming down any time soon. Inter beat Bologna (with a splendid goal from Ibrahimovic), while Lazio needed a late equalizer from Simone Inzaghi (his first goal in Serie A in 4 years) to draw with Lecce.

UEFA Cup First Round, Leg 2 - Benfica End Napoli’s Dream, Milan, Sampdoria, and Udinese Move On

One team short. Serie A's chance to get a "perfect quartet" into the UEFA Cup GS round will have to wait another year. Indeed, three of Italy's four UEFA Cup contenders are through to the group stage as AC Milan, Sampdoria and Udinese all won their first-round ties. Udinese needed a penalty shoot-out to thwart [. Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 5

1

When looking at the schedule of the 5th Giornata, all eyes had to be on Milan-Inter. The Derby was important not only for fans of those teams but for fans of other teams, as everyone had to hope Inter were stopped. And they were stopped, as the Rossoneri prevailed with a thunderous header from Ronaldinho, who scored his first goal in a Milan jersey.

Serie A Quick Midweek Round-up: Giornata 4

3

For some reason whenever Serie A plays during the week I always feel like it isn't the same. I love the tradition of Serie A Sundays and Serie A on Wednesday just feels strange. But it's still Serie A, so I could care less because I love calcio. Giornata 4 was another great round of calcio: Inter took sole lead of the Serie A table after getting a result vs a tough Lecce side thanks to Julio Cruz, Juventus drew Catania at home and wasted many chances to get all 3 points, Milan keeps bouncing back after a win in Reggio Calabria, Roma continues to struggle after losing away to Genoa, and Fiorentina were outclassed by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Santacroce: Don’t pick me for your fantasy team…

3

For all those who have Serie A fantasy teams, here's a tip for you: Don't pick Fabiano Santacroce. Who says? Santacroce himself! The Italy U-21 defender (who has an Italian father and a Brazilian mother) is one of the most promising defenders in all of Italy, and has drawn comparisons to Alessandro Nesta.
