Can Moneyball work in soccer?

2
My work on the CONCACAF club/league coefficients had motivated me to return to a draft post that I had written at the beginning of this year. I had put it aside in order to give me time to formulate and organize my thoughts, and now it's time to put ideas to pixels. This is a longish post about a topic that I hope to further develop in future months and years. Click to continue reading...

My comments on CFU Club Rankings

0
A couple of months ago a guy named "Sage" informed me of a ranking formula that he had developed for Caribbean clubs and asked me to provide some comments. I've done so at the Puerto Rico Islanders fan forum. Look for a post titled by "HexagonalMan". It's in Spanish, but I'll give a translation later if there is sufficient interest. New CONCACAF coefficients coming soon

A few readers have asked me if I have released any updates of the CONCACAF club and country coefficients. The answer is that I have not, but will do so after the Houston-Firpo match in a couple of weeks. I will probably use the same formula that UEFA use to compute its coefficients now that the larger countries (USA and Mexico) have teams represented in the preliminary round of the competition. But there it is. Houston Dynamo USA 24.000 Puntarenas FC Costa Rica 23.771 Pérez Zeledón Costa Rica 21.771 Herediano Costa Rica 21. Click to continue reading...

Developing CONCACAF coefficients, Part 2

Two weeks ago I wrote a post on my attempts to develop a formula for calculating club and domestic league coefficients in CONCACAF. The primary application of this formula is the allocation of slots in future editions of the CONCACAF Champions League by ranking the clubs and their respective leagues. Click to continue reading...

Another DVD to distract me from my deadlines

7
In my never-ending quest for quality entertainment, I recently discovered that MLS has put out a new DVD for me to add to my collection. It's called "Gamebreakers: The Stars of Major League Soccer", and it allows me, the viewer to, "(c)elebrate the exhilarating action of the world-class stars of Major League Soccer with a high-energy look at clutch, game-winning moments steeled in the red-hot forge of the beautiful game. Link-o-tron: Soccer Statistics

I stumbled upon this rather excellent site last night. These fellows are most definitely kindred spirits. They enjoy data analysis and footballoutsiders.com, they reference Miguel De Cervantes and Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, and they don't like Martin Samuel.

They've composed a very good piece about the tribulations of Spurs which makes my Paul Robinson diatribe look hideously basic. Click to continue reading...
