Bolton go out of the Carling Cup to end any chance of glory

0
Bolton boss Gary Megson doen't always treat the Carling Cup with much respect. He is not unlike many other managers when he rests much of his first team from playing in the early rounds of the competition. Last season, he even did the same in the Uefa Cup. Last night a weakened Bolton side went out of the Carling Cup in a 2-1 defeat at home to League One Northampton Town. Click to continue reading...

Silvestre to Arsenal is better than a move to City...

1
Silvestre moving to Arsenal has to be a better alternative than moving to Man City, because it's bad enough having Mark Hughes at Eastlands without adding to the numbers of ex-reds at the City of Manchester Stadium. In ideal world, Silvestre would have moved back to play in France or some other overseas destination, somewhere out of harm's way. Click to continue reading...

English Premier League Preview: The Big Four

0

The English Premier League season kicks off tomorrow and the general consensus is that only four teams have a serious chance of winning the league title. As much as Tottenham would like to disagree, that believe is grounded in reality.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are some of the world's best teams, boasting the game's most talented players and most expensive rosters.

Chelsea captain John Terry believes Manchester United have reached their peak

Chelsea captain John Terry has issued fierce statement of intent to rivals Manchester United by insisting his club will raise the bar this season, arguing United have peaked.

The bullish declaration follows United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's claim a month ago that the London club are 'too old' to challenge for honours this season. Click to continue reading...

D.C. United Advances to U.S. Open Cup Finals

Look, I want to be ecstatic. We have a game to play, and it's a game for silverware. And if we win, we get another year of international competition. And we won with multiple goals, right?

I can't fake it. We beat the New England reserves.

Man United Wins Community Shield 3-1 On Penalties: Your Thoughts

6
So, Manchester United has picked up another piece of silverware after beating Portsmouth 3-1 on penalties in the annual curtain raiser to the new season. The game, which ended 0-0 in regular time, was a bit of a sleeper at times with Man United controlling large portions of the match but unable to score. Click to continue reading...

Kids impress against gravity compliant Sevilla

2
A very creditable 1-1 draw against a strong Sevilla side gave us a 'trophy' of sorts yesterday, amazingly the starting eleven was not even as strong as our full reserve side. Injuries to Nasri and Diaby resulted in the squad appearing more thread bare than it actually is, having said that if we are to fight for silverware on several fronts we will have to bring in at least one more player. Arsenal: Carling Cup Sacrifices and The Pre-Mature Return of Bad Luck

1
Traditionally Wenger has used the Carling Cup to give the young players a chance. But there is an underlying tension amongst fans that if Arsenal doesn't collect any silverware this year then integral players such as Fabregas and Adebayor will leave. With this in mind, I ask whether or not it is worth fielding a "B" Team for the entirety of the Carling Cup campaign. Click to continue reading...

The Games and a Dark Horse

0

I previously wrote about how much I hated the Olympics and what they do to football, but after signing Keane, I'm suddenly not as worried. Keane can easily slip into a wing position and we can cover Mascherano's position with the current roster. If Barry were to sign on soon, it would be even easier.

Is it all finally coming together?

0
So not only did Martin Jol win a trophy at the Emirates this weekend, but we picked up some more silverware in the form of the Feyenoord Jubilee Tournament Trophy. I don't think I've been this excited since we won the 2005 Peace Cup! I watched our victories over Celtic and Borussia Dortmund and was pretty pleased with what I witnessed (other than the German's constant fouling). Click to continue reading...

Adebayor was for Barca before he was against it

1

In political parlance he is a flip flopper. The fans at the Emirates let him have it when he showed up to play Juve. The only thing that can get Ade back in favour would be to keep a low profile and repeat a 30 goal scoring season. In the end if that leads to meaningful silverware, then all can and will be forgiven.

Ade, Ade booed - plus Arsenal asked Barcelona about Bojan

3

Morning all,

happy Sunday to you all. A 1-0 defeat to Juventus yesterday in the Emirates Cup made it unlikely that we'll retain this most prestigious pieces of silverware, unless we spank Real Madrid today.

The Trezeguet goal was miles offside, even a blind man who didn't know the offside rule would have given it.

Sydney 2 v Wellington 3: Sydney's limited player roster backfires (again)

3
This match sounds like it just about turned into a fight. With Mitchell Prentice earning a straight red (Wellington Captain Andrew Durante go his 2nd yellow in this incident), and Alex Brosque and Dez Giraldi earning suspension causing yellows. With Sydney now out of the pre-season cup, and only 19 signings and Giraldi as cover for injured Aloisi, born again Melbourne Victory have been prized an easy round one for the start of the A-League season. Manchester United vs. Chelsea – the Psychological Battle Begins

1
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson believes the old boys at Chelsea may not provide much of a challenge for major silverware this coming season.

The BBC reports that Sir Alex believes Liverpool and Arsenal are the true threats to Man U's Premier League title.

Sir Alex's psychological salvo was launched toward Stamford Bridge with a couple of zingers picked up by the BBC:

"Chelsea are an experienced side and I don't see outstanding progress coming from a team in their 30s. Click to continue reading...

We need a dose of transfer realism

There was an interesting interview with Chairman Peter Hill-Wood on the official site yesterday. Most of it was run of the mill stuff, about how the board are patient but not complacent, and it ties in with what Danny Fiszman said a few days previously - that it's time to bring some silverware to the new stadium.
