Manchester United let another cat out of the bag!

On Monday Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that when Aiden McGeady was a teenager, he attempted to sign the Republic of Ireland international winger. And yesterday it was someone else's turn. Villarreal defensive midfielder Marcos Senna has revealed that two years ago, in the summer of 2006, the Red . Click to continue reading...

Did We Miss A Trick With Senna?

5
Two years ago Sky Sports News reported that Manchester United had signed Marcos Senna for £3.5 million. Guillem Balague then announced the deal hadn't yet been confirmed, but would be shortly, however for a fee closer to £6 million. The reaction from the United fans was fairly mixed, with most being put off by his age. Click to continue reading...

Game Blog: Spain v Armenia

1

Iniesta the Great, Bojan debuting, Villa bagging a brace and some melodrama about substitutes as always . . oh, and Spain beat Armenia 4-0! And while it wasn't quite the 7-0 slaughter that Bosnia inflicted on Estonia, it was pretty much over by the 16th minute. Iniesta had a mesmerizing homecoming at Albacete, quickening pulses whenever he got the ball and racking up 3 gorgeous assists.

No Signings Before the Deadline...What's Your Response?

2
Hello all. I'm still alive if anyone was wondering, I just haven't had a good chance to write in ages. Since I last posted we won 3-0 against Newcastle which was a great result, and the transfer window closed last night. I waited up watching the news tickers on and off all day hoping for Xabi Alonso, or anyone else for that matter, and it just never happened. Click to continue reading...

Click to continue reading...

Spain midfield maestro rejects Aragones

Newly-appointed Fenerbahce coach Luis Aragones wasted no time in trying to lure one of the key members of Spain's Euro 2008-winning squad to Turkey. Sadly, the plan has not worked as the player declared his love for native Spain. Valencia midfielder Marcos Senna, who starred so brilliantly for Spain this summer, . Click to continue reading...

Was Xavi Really The Best Of Euro 2008?

0
EPL Talk reader Alan Jacobs posed an excellent question about Euro 2008 and Xavi. Here's the question: Alan Jacobs: I have scanned the papers and blogs and, while I have found many all-tournament teams, I have yet to find a single one that names Xavi. Conversely, almost everyone (rightly in my view) singles out Senna for [. Click to continue reading...

A study provides an insight into Senna's capabilities

4

Marcos Senna is listed as a midfielder but his usefulness lies in his being a utility player capable of coming forward on attack, falling back to defend, and controlling midfield. He is strong in the air, very capable with free kicks, burns up the outside turf to slice in a cross, quick and decisive in his tackling, and shows some dribbling chops too, turning and twisting his way through defenders.

Rumor: Euro hero not coming to Arsenal

44 Years of Hurt

0

So they finally did it, and only the most bitter fans could say they weren't secretly pleased for Spain. For tournament after tournament they consistently have the best team on paper, but somehow always manage to find a way to capitulate. Finally though this year the duck was broken, and one wonders now whether this young Spanish side might go on to dominate world football for some time now.

Cesc Speaks About Hleb and Adebayor, Senna Linked

4
Morning all. Sorry I haven't been updating as recently as I'd like, I've just been really busy lately.

So Samir Nasri hasn't been officially signed yet, which makes my prediction from two days ago wrong. I'm positive he will sign though, but I am going to stop predicting when. I would assume it will be this week but every other time anyone has guessed it's turned out to be wrong so I'll just wait until it's officially announced. Click to continue reading...

A strange signing + news round-up

1

A few bits and pieces to keep us going this morning.

I suppose we'll start with the Amaury Bischoff thing. According the player he's going to join us to play in the reserves having failed to make a single start for Werder Bremen in his time at the German club. I think much of that was due to injury rather than ability.

Rumor mill: Is 31 too old for Wenger?

Congratulations and felicidades to Spain on their Euro2008 title. They are deserved winners in all categories - goals scored, allowed, time of possession, shots, shots on, and most importantly, they won their games.Special mention for Marcos Senna, pictured on the left above. His play in the "Makalele Role" was the key to Spain's entire game and the newly emerging meme of the "Senna Role" is telling. Click to continue reading...

Fernando Torres for Spain (v Germany), 29 June 2008

0
OK,OK.

So I maybe once or twice stated quite categorically that Spain didn't have the mental strength or team ethic to win the European Championships.

Hmmm. It sppears they were much better than I expected. Well done to them - I don't begrudge them a win as there has rarely been a country whose international trophy haul belies the talent they have been able to draw on (except for Holland and to a lesser extent England, I suppose). El sabio ed il "negro"

Germany 0-1 Spain

Spain claimed their first major title for 44 years after winning Euro 2008 with a deserved victory over Germany. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was Spain's goal hero, striking after 33 minutes when he cleverly lifted Xavi's pass over Germany keeper Jens Lehmann.

Spain dominated the final throughout, with Torres heading against the post and Marcos Senna almost adding a second from close range after 80 minutes. Click to continue reading...

Xavi

2
Those of us who regularly watch and follow Barcelona are well aware of the craft and alchemical transcendence that Xavi and Iniesta can conjure up on a weekly basis. They work as a team within a team--quick thinking, fleet of foot, unselfish, and daring enough to slip passes through a clomp of defenders when it seems most unstable, almost ruinous to do so. Torres the goal-scoring hero as Spain win Euro 2008 Final 1-0 over Germany

Torres did really well to score his goal, with Lahm and Lehmann losing out.

Aragones took off Fabregas for Xabi Alonso. Xabi did ok while he was in there, but a better manager would have found a way to keep Cesc on as he was growing into the game.

Iniesta once again looked like a great midfielder pushing forward. Click to continue reading...

Lehmann needs to be sharp for Germany's sake

Germany will be feeling a bit relieved as Spain will be without David Villa who has been ruled out with a muscle tear in his thigh. But they still have Torres and Guiza to contend with. And Silva, Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi, Senna, and Ramos.

This Spanish team is not afraid to let it fly from long distance and Lehmann's reflexes will be sorely tested.
