Some Soccer, Some Other Stuff-It’s Saturday

0
It's a warm, foggy Saturday morning here in post-election New Hampshire.  Most of the political signs are put away, and gunshots now ring through the hillsides. Rebellion against the new socialist state?  Post-election right wing despair?  Nah.  Hunting season.  It's more personal this year than some, as the doe and two fawns that we've been watching [. ‘80 Phillies ‘08

1
There's lots to be said for symmetry!  Indeed, back in '80, the first time the Phillies won it all, yours truly was about to turn 28 ... and now here we are 28 years later!  Yeah, symmetry!  :)  On a chilly night in Philly, they did it again! That training Scene from Rocky 1 still [...] Click to continue reading...

Sorry Sox … and Straight Talk Express

2
It was a good run, Red Sox ... but now it's up to the Phillies to take the devil out of those Rays, I guess.  A rested Philadelphia team meets the Rays in Florida for game 1 on Wednesday night.  Here's hoping for either a good, exciting, long Series or (my personal favorite) a four [...] Click to continue reading...

Frost on the Pumpkin, Red Sox on Fire, Palin on SNL, and Katrina Vanden Heuvel on Michele Bachmann

0
Guess we missed out on the basil this year!  This morning there's serious frost everywhere.  Stern frost.  Dour frost.  A layer of it whitens the windows and powders the ground.  The nasturtiums still look miraculously green, but the zinnias and cosmos are brown.  November brown.  This frost will disappear as the sun rises and warms [. Will It Blend?

0
No baseball to report on.  No debate.  I am forced to move to Plan B.  (Don't try this at home.) What brought me to this?  It began with my morning visit to Woot - a site that HollyCornblog turned me onto some years ago. I check it first thing and sometimes find really good deals.  [...] Click to continue reading...

Phillies Clinch and McCain Continues to Tank

0
It really wasn't a contest at Dodger Stadium last night ... and wasn't one at Hofstra, either. The Phillies clinched their sixth-ever World Series berth in just five games, with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers, behind good offensive production and the strong arm of NLCS MVP Cole Hamels!  I'd love to see them face the [. Phillies’ Bats Come up Big … etc.

2
It wasn't looking good for Chase Utley and crew when yours truly hit the hay last night.  But 40 year old Matt Stairs' 2-run homer put the Phillies in the win column for the 3rd time in the NLCS - and on the brink of their first World Series since 1993. Speaking of 1993 made me [...] Click to continue reading...

Some general internet stuff today (you notice I am avoiding all mention of sport).

I found this on the superb GoogleSightSeeing blog.

Joe Kinnear's Swears Make Baby Jesus Cry

3
After sitting through hours of sterile political debate, both Vice Presidentialist and the Maple Syrup variety, it's nice to hear someone willingly spout expletives at the national media. Wouldn't this be much, much more elucidating?

Biden: Well, Sarah, I respect and admire John McCain for his service to America, but he's kind of acting like a douchebag to the American middle class. Click to continue reading...

OUTGOING: Crew on the Move? Columbus Crew to Las Vegas?

17
First off, we're very sorry that we had to temporarily stop posting rumors. We'll spare you the boring details as you no doubt have had enough of them.

Skip to "And we're back!" below if you don't care to know what we've been up to while NOT posting rumors.

Suffice to say our friend in Salt Lake felt the need to get "all lawyered up", guess that's just how he rolls, "Why I'll sue! Click to continue reading...

So Much Depends …

0
I read on The Writer's Almanac that it's William Carlos Williams' birthday today.  He wrote one of my favorite poems - The Red Wheelbarrow. so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. It makes me think of looking into crystalline water ... absolutely transparent and absolutely mysterious! Click to continue reading...

Joel Santana is feeling the heat

0

The national squad's performances isn't impressing the FIFA head.

Sepp Blatter, president of world soccer governing body Fifa, says he is "really disappointed" at the abysmal showing of Bafana Bafana, and plans some straight talking with local soccer bosses on the issue.

An implicit condemnation of Joel Santana's managerial career.

McCain Beyond the Palin - Even Turdblossom Decries the Lies

1
Yes, it's true.  Turdblossom (aka Karl Rove) has spoken out about the excesses of the McCain campaign ads.  To my mind the fact that he would do this publicly speaks, not to any new found sense of decorum or fair play in the doughy sleazeball, but to the fractiousness and internecine warfare within the Republican [. In What Respect, Charlie?

4
This clip of Charlie Gibson's interview with Sarah Palin pretty much says it all.  McCain may be channeling Bush, but Sarah is pretty much the real thing ... never EVER letting her ignorance stand in the way of her swagger and bellicosity. Here's a bit more from the interview ... Pressed about what insights into recent [. Click to continue reading...

Maddow, Huffington, a Bit of Soccer, and Yeah, Some Palin, Too

2
So Rachel Maddow's new show premiered last night and while I didn't see the whole thing (had a meeting) and didn't see Boltgirl there (not yet, that is), what I saw I liked a lot (not surprisingly).  Way to go Rachel! Ariana Huffington has written about Sarah Palin as the Trojan Moose who distracts the electorate [. Click to continue reading...

Sarah Palin, Soccer Moms, and Guy Lafleur's Disco Album

Some Hockey Mom's Son

A lot is being said about Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's use of the term 'hockey mom,' her catchall for middle-class American housewives scared to death of Mad Cow Disease, Islamic fundamentalism, and Hispanic people.

It seems the old 'Soccer Mom' cliche, like the minivan, Dave Matthews Band, and East Asian market melt-downs, is so 1999. Click to continue reading...

Another DVD to distract me from my deadlines

7
In my never-ending quest for quality entertainment, I recently discovered that MLS has put out a new DVD for me to add to my collection. It's called "Gamebreakers: The Stars of Major League Soccer", and it allows me, the viewer to, "(c)elebrate the exhilarating action of the world-class stars of Major League Soccer with a high-energy look at clutch, game-winning moments steeled in the red-hot forge of the beautiful game.
