Sangre americana J11 recap

1
Back with another update on our boys south of the border, both in the top flight and second tier. Of course, now there is quite a bit more interest with Jose Francisco Torres committing to the US. Torres responded to his call-up to the US with his second 90-minute effort of the season... and his third booking. Click to continue reading...

Wailing and gnashing of teeth

2
Ok, so people aren't really crying in the streets of Mexico that they've lost Torres to the U.S., but they don't seem happy about it, either. Here's an article I translated from espn.deportes
- it's a little vague on sources and light on quotes, but one definitely gets the sense that some people feel Eriksson really dropped the ball on this one. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J8 update

3
Our young Mexican-Americans were in action over the weekend in Mexico. Okay, well, closer to the truth... their teams were in action. But we didn't get to see Jesus Padilla, Daniel Hernandez or Michael Orozco play. And as far as I can tell Sonny Guadarrama isn't with Morelia much, and if he is still around he isn't dressing for matches anymore. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J7 recap

1
El Gringo scores! The most newsworthy item among our Mexican-American boys in Mexico was Jesus Padilla's goal. Now, I'm not sure if Gerardo Mascerano scored in his one and only season with Chivas but this may be the first time an American scored for Chivas during league play in its history.

It probably won't be the last as the native son of San Jose, Calif. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J6 update

1
Another game, another goal. This time, it's from Jose Francisco Torres, and this time we've got highlights.

Torres started and played 58 minutes for Pachuca in their 2-0 win over Puebla. He picked up a yellow card as well as scoring his first-ever goal in the Primera Division.

Also in action. Click to continue reading...

Doble jornada for Mexican-Americans

1
There will be a near-full slate of action in Mexico tonight as Jornada 6 will continue.

Of course, two games have already been played while another is slated for November and those three games involve teams who have some of our players on them: San Luis-Cruz Azul, Toluca-Chivas and Jaguares-Pumas. Click to continue reading...

Borja tallies

3
Sorry I'm just getting to this but I just ran across it.

Seems like an American scored a goal for Chivas de Guadalajara's second-division side. And it wasn't El Gringo either.

On Monday, Carlos Borja scored the only goal for Tapatio in a 1-0 win over Academicos, Atlas' Primera A side. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J5 update

5
Michael Orozco is back with San Luis. He reported earlier this week back to his club and will now try and regain his starting spot in San Luis' defense. San Luis hasn't necessarily missed him. While Tigres and Pumas have yielded fewer goals than San Luis, los Guerreros have a whopping 16 points through five games. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J4 update

1
Things got a bit interesting for one of our own in the First Division this weekend. Jesus Padilla got some actual playing time for Chivas as he came on at halftime. He didn't make it to the end of the match, though, as he got a red card three minutes from time. So he's gone for next week as well, a suspension that I believe keeps him out of Tapatio's match as well. Click to continue reading...

Non-call on Torres

0
I'll be updating our Mexican-Americans after Jornada 4 is over but I just wanted to share this video of Jose Francisco Torres. He was taken down inside the box, and stepped on for good measure, but no call was made. Was it a PK? You decide.

Torres came on in the 62nd minute in the match, which finished 1-1. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J3 recap

1
Well, here's the recap for the Mexican-Americans in Mexico. Outside obligations kept me from posting a preview of this week's action so I'll catch you up as much as possible here and now.

We had one player move up from the Primera A to the top flight as Jesus Padilla's goal against Barcelona apparently earned him some bench time for Guadalajara - well, that and Omar Arellano's injury. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J2 recap

1
Week 2 (or 3 for some of the Primera A guys) is in the books and there wasn't a whole lot of action. Only two of the top-flight guys played, and one was a sub.

However, Jesus Padilla scored a goal. And it wasn't against a scrubby second-division side either.

Edgar Castillo - Played 90 minutes in Santos' 1-1 draw with Pumas. Click to continue reading...

Torres for SI

6
I shared Jose Francisco Torres' tale with my SI.com readers.

I tried to add some new elements by making a comparision between Torres and Michael Orozco as well as Edgar Castillo. Orozco of course is with the US and Castillo with Mexico. Torres may become the next Orozco, the next Castillo or just a solid league player with no international prospects. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana J2 preview

Week Two (or Jornada 2) in the Mexican Apertura 2008 is upon us. Several of our America-born players have already seen action in both la Primera and Primera A but others have yet to debut and won't debut this weekend either.

Here is a preview of the Mexican-Americans down south.

Sangre americana J1 recap

0
One week of Mexico's Apertura 2008 season is in the books and here is how the Sangre americana lot fared.

Sort of slow actually as only one of the first-division players saw action. In total, though, one American scored two goals over the weekend.

Edgar Castillo - Played 90 minutes in Santos' 3-2 loss to America. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Torres

0
Jose Francisco Torres passed on the US Olympic team so he could play more for Pachuca. On Saturday, we'll learn if that was a good decision.

Torres was in a preseason battle with plenty of other talented players for a starting spot in Pachuca's loaded midfield, and while he doesn't bring years of experience to the table, he has plenty of other qualities that make him appealing. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Borja, N.Castillo

1
What do you get when you cross Carlos Borja and Noel Castillo? A former youth international whose brother is the superior athlete? Not exactly.

Actually, you get two guys who can only hope that the Apertura 2008 season leads to more playing time in the second division, which in turn might lead to a bright future in 2009 and beyond. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Guadarrama

1
Sonny boy! After the Clausura 2008 season, I would have bet money that Sonny Guadarrama would not have made it through the summer unscathed. A new coach came in midseason (Luis Fernando Tena) and Guadarrama saw zero playing time with the first team once that happened.

But Guadaramma made it and his prospects are pretty good - at earning playing time that is. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Hernandez

2
Daniel Hernandez was a bad boy. It wasn't his play - which actually was pretty solid a year ago. It was his temperament that led to his downfall. That and his teammates' inability to keep their tempers in check.

After a brawl broke out in the Jaguares-Cruz Azul playoff match a year ago, Hernandez and several of his teammates were slapped with suspensions to start the Apertura 2008 season. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Ochoa

0
Sammy Ochoa got a shot to show his worth to U.S. national team coaches earlier this year in France but despite scoring a goal he was not called up for the big show.

It's sort of fitting as that has been his calling card with Tecos UAG. And so far, this season is already following along those lines. Click to continue reading...

Edgar in the Times

1
Edgar Castillowas profiled in the New York Times on Wednesday.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, there may be little new information in there that you haven't already come across here. But his story is clearly of interest to more than just soccer fans as a whole new audience has now been exposed to his tale. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Orozco

9
At the start of the Clausura 2008 season, few American soccer fans had heard of Michael Orozco. Now, though, he's become a part of the U.S. national team system and will represent the U.S. in the upcoming Summer Olympics.

And while he'll be away for perhaps one-fourth of the upcoming Apertura 2008 season, he will at some point go back ad try and reclaim a spot on the club. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Padilla

3
San Jose, Calif., native Jesus Padilla had a once-promising career at some point. But now, he seems firmly entrenched in the second division. That much was evident last season when he spent all but a brief moment of his time with Tapatio.

How much has changed entering the Apertura 2008 season? Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Castillo

1
New Mexico native Edgar Castillo took a shot with Santos Laguna as an 18-year-old. Winning an open tryout, he eventually earned a chance at playing in the first division. At the age of 22, Castillo is an established member of the reigning Mexican league champion and a budding star with the national team. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Vidal

Mexico's Apertura 2008 season is upon us. In a few days, 18 clubs will begin yet another season that promises to bring with it high drama, memorable goals and exciting matches.

Among the dozens of players who will see action this season are a small band of American-born players, our beloved Sangre americana lot. Click to continue reading...

My first story on Torres

1
Except I have no link to prove it. Oh well. If you read this blog regularly, you already know all about Jose Francisco Torres and how he told me he turned down a chance to play for the United States in the Olympics this summer.

I decided to write a bit on him during my weekly Tuesday column for the Press-Enterprise. Click to continue reading...

Early start for Americans

13
As the start of the Mexican Apertura 2008 season approaches, I was doing some work for the upcoming editions of Sangre americana, where I keep tabs on American-born players in Mexico.

What I failed to notice is that the Primera A season got underway and we had two American-born players as well as a naturalized citizen see action. Click to continue reading...

Edgar in two languages

1
Edgar Castillo was a popular player following Wednesday's match. Because he can speak English and is a key player for Santos Laguna, it was easier for the English reporters to deal with him. In general, it's easier to deal with anyone directly when you don't lose anything in translation.

But Edgar did field some questions in Spanish. Click to continue reading...

Santos coach talks U.S. players

2
Daniel Guzman didn't participate in a post-match press conference. When I caught up to him in the mixed zone, he was actually being asked about whether or not, with the success of a Mexican-American like Edgar Castillo, he was interested in bringing in more U.S. players. Here's his response. I didn't translate, because the Chivas USA media officer is translating in the background. Click to continue reading...

Jose Francisco Torres in his own words

0
Sunday was a bit of a madhouse down in the mixed zone. There is no locker room access but rather players walk past you and you ask them to stop. Most do, some don't. In the midst of talking to Chivas USA players, I got the chance to talk to Jose Francisco Torres, the Texas native who plays for Pachuca. Click to continue reading...

"Chispa" Castillo

To victor goes the analysis.

Mediotiempo.com takes a look at the Mexican league champion Santos, and does a player-by-player look at the newly-crowned Mexican monarchs.

Here's what they said about New Mexico native Edgar Castillo:

Sangre americana update

2
It's been a busy spell for the sangre americana contingent over the last few days. Let me catch you up on the goings-on of the American boys down in Mexico.

- Sammy Ochoa scored a goal for the U.S. Under-23 national in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Turkey in France. Ochoa had trouble in the first half before playing much better in the second half and scoring on a long-range shot. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana: Liguilla edition
