The Gooch Rockin’ The Mic

1
Onyewu showed up in today's UEFA Cup match and scored the first goal of the game for Standard Liege.  Looks like the little American has some fire in him and wants to be taken seriously in this transfer window.  Hey, Marseille might have to pay 7 million to secure the big man. Jokes aside, a [...] Click to continue reading...

UEFA Cup: Gooch, Standard Crush Sampdoria

4
Standard Liege continues to punch above its weight this season, this time with a 3-0 win over Serie A side Sampdoria. With American defender Oguchi Onyewu anchoring a strong Standard defense while the Belgian side's attack put the Genoa side under pressure early and often.

Igor De Camargo opened scoring in the 23rd minute on a header past Sampdoria keeper Luca Castellazzi, who was a busy man on the tonight. Click to continue reading...

Serie A’s Ugliest Footballers

So Lorenzo and Alessio had a good idea for a post, we are going to crown Serie A's Ugliest Footballer. There are quite a few of them, and this is the post where we'll nominate footballers. I'll list some here, and if you have a nomination state it in the comments section and I'll add him to the running.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 14

1

Palermo and Italy goalkeeper Marco Amelia said saving Ronaldinho's penalty kick was "like playing Playstation". Now I bet tons of clubs will be getting calls from FIFA '09 addicts saying they should get a trial because they are good at saving penalties on Playstation. Roundup after the jump.

After triple and double wins on Matchday 1 and Matchday 2, the Serie A wave of success came to an halt in the UEFA Cup Group Stage. With Udinese taking a break this round, both AC Milan and Sampdoria couldn't do better than 2-2 and 1-1 draws vs. Portsmouth and Stuttgart on Thursday. However, while the [. Happy Tacchino-Day!

0

Happy Thanksgiving (or Tacchino Day) to all the Italy Offside readers! Enjoy your day and eat lots of food! I tried to find a picture of an Italian turkey, this the best I could do (or google image search could do), a turkey with the Italian name for turkey next to it.

This now leads me to my bad Italian calcio Thanksgiving joke:

Which Italian soccer player's favorite holiday is Thanksgiving?

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 12 (plus Serie B and other news)

Roma, languishing in the relegation zone before the derby, took on Lazio, who are flying high in the upper echelons of the table. Roma needed a victory over their rivals to kick-start their season and boost morale, while Lazio were looking to confirm themselves as a side to be reckoned with this season.

Juventus-Genoa and Coppa Italia round-up

0

Because of the Italian National Rugby Team playing a game at the Stadio Olimpico in Torino on Sunday, Juventus-Genoa had to be played today. Juventus have been playing well as of late and have been led by the inspirational play of Alessandro Del Piero. Genoa have proved a tricky opponent this season and have seemed almost unbeatable at home.

Antonio Cassano releases his autobiography, and he’s not afraid to tell it like it is (like always)

7

News today is that Antonio Cassano has (with the help of writer Gianluigi Pardo) authored his first autobiography, entitled "Vi Dico Tutto" (I'll tell you everything). And as always, Cassano does indeed tell us everything. We'll have to wait for the book to actually be released (it will be on Italian bookshelves next week, November 19 to be exact) to read everything but some excerpts were released and they are quite amusing and interesting.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 11

Can anyone tell me what type of performance enhancing drug Alessandro Del Piero is taking right now? (Juventus fans don't jump on my back, that was my attempt at humor). Another inch perfect free kick, and on his 34th birthday to boot. Serie A results after "il salto" (the jump).

Video of the Week: Lavezzi vs. Cassano- Spectacle at the San Paolo

2

If you find yourself watching the Serie A game of your choice this Sunday and start yawning (not due to tiredness but due to the boredom of the game), try and find a way to switch over to Napoli-Sampdoria. With Ezequiel Lavezzi leading the Partenopei and Antonio Cassano leading the Blucerchiati, there should be fireworks.

Daily Calcio News and Notes - 11/4/08

1

Here's what I found interesting after reading various calcio news sites today:

-First, we have another managerial change in Serie A. Chievo haven't won since the first week of the season and manager Beppe Iachini has been sacked. Taking his place will be Domenico Di Carlo, who was in charge of Parma until March of last season.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 10

Wow can you believe we're already at Giornata 10? I feel like Serie A was just starting just yesterday. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly Milan-Napoli. Napoli have been the surprise of the campaign so far, led by young starlets Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marek Hamsik, and Fabiano Santacroce, and playing excellent, attractive football.

UEFA Cup Draw Announced

Much of the press will go to Milan (this is the fourth story on the ESPN front page, not Soccernet) & the British clubs, but the more intriguing matchups are to be found elsewhere, and none has more potential than Group C. Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 6 (Plus Serie B + National Team Call-ups!)

0

At the end of the 6th Giornata we still saw surprises. Inter is top of the table, but they share a place with Lazio and Udinese, two squads who have been impressing in this start of the season. Both clubs are putting in good performances and don't look like calming down any time soon. Inter beat Bologna (with a splendid goal from Ibrahimovic), while Lazio needed a late equalizer from Simone Inzaghi (his first goal in Serie A in 4 years) to draw with Lecce.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 5

When looking at the schedule of the 5th Giornata, all eyes had to be on Milan-Inter. The Derby was important not only for fans of those teams but for fans of other teams, as everyone had to hope Inter were stopped. And they were stopped, as the Rossoneri prevailed with a thunderous header from Ronaldinho, who scored his first goal in a Milan jersey.

Sampdoria 0-0 Juventus: Lackluster Performance at Marassi, Blucerchiati & Bianconeri Strike Out (Serie A Matchday 5)

No deal for Sampdoria and Juventus: based on pre-game statistics, a 0-0 draw was a result almost foretold in advance. Serie A Quick Midweek Round-up: Giornata 4

3

For some reason whenever Serie A plays during the week I always feel like it isn't the same. I love the tradition of Serie A Sundays and Serie A on Wednesday just feels strange. But it's still Serie A, so I could care less because I love calcio. Giornata 4 was another great round of calcio: Inter took sole lead of the Serie A table after getting a result vs a tough Lecce side thanks to Julio Cruz, Juventus drew Catania at home and wasted many chances to get all 3 points, Milan keeps bouncing back after a win in Reggio Calabria, Roma continues to struggle after losing away to Genoa, and Fiorentina were outclassed by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 3

1

The third giornata of Serie A had less drama and surprises then the last two weeks, but it was interesting and exciting nonetheless. All the big teams won (including Milan for the first time): Inter swept aside Torino, Juventus won a tricky away game vs. Cagliari, Roma ended their "crisis" by soundly defeating Reggina 3-0, Milan finally won with a 4-1 victory over Lazio, and Fiorentina keep chugging along (with Gila scoring goals) with a win vs.
