John Terry to go for gold in London 2012?

0
Old-new England captain John Terry looks like he has got a chance of competing in the Olympics even if a Great Britain side do not enter the football tournament. The Chelsea man's post-Moscow penalty shootout trauma does make him look uncannily like a synchronised diver. For all his flaws on the field, we never thought JT could be accused of being a diver. John Terry named England captain.

0
Couldn't have picked a better man.  Sportsmanship, maturity, respect for authority -- natch.  "England's Brave John Terry" has got it all. As usual, the Fiver nails it when comparing Ferdinand to Terry: Capello, like the Fiver, was obviously impressed at the way [Terry's] alter ego Mr Chelsea performed during the penalty shootout at this year's Big Cup [. United Take First ‘Trophy’ of Season

0
It was a penalty shootout again, like last season's community shield. But at least last season saw two goals in open play. This was a 0-0 draw where United dominated possession throughout the game only to find it extremely hard to put the ball into the net. It's emblematic of United's troubles, if any. Manchester United took their second consecutive Community Shield trophy on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth at Wembley. Revolution make a statement by downing Dynamo

1
Dell 'Apa: All-out brawls marked the postgame events of the semifinals. But the final became as much a bonding experience for the players as an occasion for the New England Revolution to gain vengeance on the Houston Dynamo.

New England triumphed 6-5 in a penalty shootout after double overtime had seen both teams tied at 2-2. Click to continue reading...

Lucky Melbourne: Pre-Season Cup Wellington 0 v Melbourne 0 (Victory on penalties)

1
Lucky Melbourne. Lucky Lucky Michael Theoklitos. He should be watching the first few games from his lounge room. He still may if the FFA decides to review the DVD of the game.

Melbourne won but it took them 9 kicks in the penalty shootout. Theoklitos saved them. But he may have been sent off in about the 50th. Click to continue reading...

Will The Better Team Win The Penalty Shootout?

2
The FA Cup often pitches teams from different divisions against each other. Sometimes those ties have to be decided by a penalty shootout. This has happened 22 times in the last seven years. Colorado Rapids 0-0 UANL Tigres (Unofficial: 6-5 pens)

0

The Rapids – Tigres friendly went into the books as a scoreless draw, but apparently this whole match was put together by Tecate and they wanted to give a trophy to the winner, so they handed the trophy to the winner of an unofficial penalty shootout, which was the Rapids.

As for the match itself, it was nothing too spectacular.

US Open Cup: And Then There Were Four

0
Last night's action means there will be one MLS team and one USL team in this year's US Open Cup final.

USL Division One sides, the Seattle Sounders and the Charleston Battery sent their two MLS contestants back to the top flight last night in the US Open Cup quarter final match ups. Click to continue reading...

Wizards Fall on Spot Kicks

1
The Wizards bowed out of the US Open Cup to the Seattle Sounders 0-0 (5-6) on penalty kicks tonight. Misses by Jimmy Conrad and Tyson Wahl during the spot kicks gave Seattle the edge, as Sebastian Le Toux hit the cross bar as well to keep it even. In the PKs, Ryan Pore, Ryan McMahen, Roger Espinoza, Kerry Zavagnin, and Michael Harrington all put their chances away. Click to continue reading...

Meanwhile, in South America...

2
...Ecuador's LDU Quito won the Copa Libertadores by virtue of a penalty kick shoot-out in Wednesday night's second leg of the finale. The Copa Libertadores, for the uninitiated, is almost certainly the second biggest club competition on the planet. Unfortunately, it doesn't get much coverage outside of South/Latin America. Euro 2008 Final Preview

2
My two favourite teams in the tournament are also the last ones standing, which makes this simultaneously my dream final and a nightmare. I'll be cheering for Germany tomorrow -- I'm half German, and my ancestors would probably rise up to beat me about the head with a beer stein if I didn't -- but I'm sure that Spain will do their best to test my loyalties with their pretty pretty football. Euro 2008 Final Preview: Spain vs. Germany Has All the Right Ingredients

2

I feel like taking a big deep breath right now. One of those breaths where, after you've been working at a furious pace, you see there are only a few minutes left on the clock, and just need to fill your lungs before you lower your head and charge in for the final exhaustive burst of energy. Italy, What a Shame! Spain Through on Penalties

VIENNA (Austria), 22 June 2008 - The adventure is over. Spain beat Italy 4-2 in the penalty shootout and send them packing. The magic of Berlin disappears on a hot Vienna night. Your Complete Guide to Euro 2008: Yawn, Yawn, Yawn

1

After the first five minutes of Italy v Spain I just KNEW the game would be decided on penalties. I just knew it!! 2 hours of tedium, 2 hours of boredom, 2 hours of nothing.

It wasn't Spain's fault they just couldn't break down the masters of negative football - 'Let's play for penalties chaps, Spain haven't won a penalty shootout on the 22nd June before.

UEFA Euro 2008: Spain-Italy Recap

0
Commentators like to say the penalty shootout is a cruel lottery, but there was nothing cruel about Spain prevailing 4-2 over Italy after a 0-0 draw. Only one team came to Vienna actively seeking a win, and while Spain battled fruitlessly for a goal for 120 minutes, at least they were battling. Spain outshot Italy 27-12, but it could have been a greater margin if Spain didn't so often seek the perfect play opposed to the quick release. Click to continue reading...

The Soccer Gods Smiled

1
The winner of the Spain vs. Italy match was not just Spain it was soccer fans everywhere. The Italians playing their trademark defensive game settled for a penalty shootout before the opening kickoff. There plans backfired when they missed two penalties and went out 4-2 to Spain. Italy was everything that soccer hate in this game. Click to continue reading...

Bosphorous 1-0 Balkans

1
It's almost as if Michel Platini was sitting in the stand with a remote control. "Honestly", he thought to himself as he recalled the one hundred and eighteen minutes of dirge that he had found himself sitting through, "if you leave them to do it for themselves, you'll always end up with one really duff match in the end". Fatih feasts on Turkish Delight

0
Well this tournament continues to exceed all expectations with the second quarter final of EURO 2008 managing to surpass the first one for sheer drama, if not quality, as Croatia vs Turkey exploded into life in the final moments after a frankly fairly drab previous 120 minutes during which both teams had pretty much cancelled each other out. The Amazing Turks do it again: Croatia's heartbreak

2

Go up a goal against Turkey at your peril. Because you will lose. Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and now Croatia.

After 122 minutes of a grueling match, it was suddenly over in a flash. Semih Senturk's last second equalizer seemed to have drained all the life out of Croatian legs as the penalty shootout unfolded.

Euro 2008: Day 9

Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic
What a way to kick off the final round of group games. Turkey were on the verge of elimination, down 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, but they put together an amazing comeback to beat the Czechs, including two goal in the last three minutes.

It was a nervy opening to the game, with a couple Turkish players booked in the first 10 minutes. Click to continue reading...

Five Things We Learned in Swissaustria, June 11

4

1. Drawing lots is a thing of the past
Five Things We Learned can be a bit tongue in cheek at times (see 2., 3. and 5.). But here's something I genuinely learned today:

Should Czech Republic vs Turkey be even stevens after 90 minutes on Sunday, then the two teams will have equal points (4) an equal head to head record (obviously), equal goal difference (-1) and an equal goals scored record.

Fiorentina 0-0 Rangers: Heartbreak for La Viola, Rangers Advance to the Final on Penalties (UEFA Cup Semi-Finals, Leg 2)

What a shame. They played better, they had more scoring chances, and they deserved a win, yet Fiorentina's 2008 UEFA Cup adventure ends in the Semi-Finals. Shootout gives Brazil a ticket to the final

Uruguay captain Diego Lugano is used to being in the middle of a celebration by Brazilians on a football pitch. On Tuesday, he was once again in the middle of a Brazilian football celebration. Click to continue reading...
