Americans Abroad: Wednesday Rewind

3

It took a while, but Freddy Adu finally made his first start for AS Monaco. The U.S. Olympic midfielder made the starting XI in Monaco's French Cup match against Paris St. Germain. It could be Adu's last start for a while after a goal from one-time Chicago Fire target Fabrice Pancrate gave PSG the win, thus ending Adu's potential source for major playing time.

Rafael Benitez suffered a torrent of abuse and saw his Liverpool side miss out on the chance to go top of the Barclays Premier League after a goalless draw at Villa Park.

Aston Villa fans taunted the Reds boss with chants of 'There's only one Gareth Barry' after the collapse of the England midfielder's move to Liverpool, and some of the crowd aimed personal insults at the Reds manager. Click to continue reading...

Au Revoir, Lilian (OR: Why I’ll Always Love Thuram)

2

There's a fair amount of France news, but I'm finding that I can't focus on anything else until I do a tribute to one of my all-time favorite players (probably second only to Zizou), Lilian Thuram.

As you probably know by now, Thuram officially retired a little over a week ago because of that recently-diagnosed heart defect.

Lillian Thuram retires

0
I just saw an article on ESPN.com that Lillian Thuram has retired from soccer due to a heart condition. He had retired from the French National Team once again and was going to move from Barcelona to Paris St. Germain for at least one more season, but has to retire due to a heart condition. Thuram is one of the last members of the great French teams from the late 1990's and early 2000's to still have been playing and was there for all of those great moments. Paris Saint-Germain and the Art Of Reinvention

1
One of the great things about football, one of the things that in my opinion is fundamental in sustaining the umbilical cord that acts as a near permanent bond between team and fan, is the consistency with which the chance arises for a club to reinvent itself and with it renew interest from both fans and onlookers. Ngog Takes Tips From Torres

2
Fernando Torres has already taken Liverpool's new French teenage striker David Ngog under his wing.

Ngog, 19, joined the club for £1.5million from Paris St Germain last week, and could well make his debut in Wednesday's friendly game against Villarreal - a match that may also see the first appearance of Robbie Keane in a Liverpool shirt. Click to continue reading...

What's Going On . . . in the Emirates Cup

What's Going On with the Emirates Cup? Well, at the moment, not much; but that will all change this coming weekend. For those of you not familiar with the Emirates Cup, it is a two-day exhibition tournament that dates back to the middle ages, if you consider last year to be the middle ages, and has continued until this day. Chelsea not too old, says Ballack

0

Ferguson said that he did not expect to see "outstanding progress coming from a team in their 30s". But Blues midfielder Ballack, 31, said: "Our team can still improve. If you are 30 or 31 you are not old.

"Claude Makelele was 34 and played well last season. This sort of banter occurs between people during the summer.

The Lad Can Play: David N'Gog

12
Excuse our indifference but we've been through this before.

No matter how hyped up the transfer of David N'Gog is, it is hard to get excited. Any flattery lavished on the French sounds far too similar to the praise devoted to the likes of Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama Pongolle before they joined. Click to continue reading...

Liverpool FC To Complete David N’Gog Deal

0

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez expects to seal a deal for teenage French forward David N'Gog today.

The club return to Melwood today after a three-match tour of Switzerland and Germany which concluded last night with a 0-0 draw against Hertha Berlin.

Although Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in pre-season to four games, a third victory could have been recorded had Andriy Voronin not seen his 50th-minute penalty saved by Christian Fiedler.

Paris St. Germain sign Makelele and Giuly

3
Some interesting news from the French Football League as Paris St. Germain have signed both Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly for next season. On the surface these seem like good signings, but I think it might be about time that Paris St. Germain start to develop a more long term plan for success. They have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe by playing in Paris with virtually no competition in terms of other big clubs to draw fans away from them (unlike London or Moscow for example). Liverpoolfc.tv amuses me

1
Seems a bit cruel to show a picture of Voronin from today's game above that headline.

I didn't see today's match – and I'm not holding a missed penalty against him – but Voronin had been decent in the three before. I've written that he did the same last year only to disappoint by May, but I'm holding out hope he's actually progressing. Click to continue reading...

Monday Ticker: Chelsea deny Kaka bid, Makelele to PSG and the Olympic call-up mess

1

It was an interesting weekend in the soccer world to say the least.

From the New England Revolution's flight to remember, to the big fan brawl at the Columbus Crew-West Ham friendly, there was plenty of off-field activity to talk about. Fortunately, there was also some on-field stuff to talk about as well, including the completion of SuperLiga group play and the MLS schedule, which finished with five ties (yes, all five games this week finished tied).

Arsenal fans are bracing themselves for another possible exit from their club. Wenger is overrated and a failure

2
This is not my opinion. This is the view of "top French football boss" Michel Moulin. The former Paris St-Germain director of sport believes that Wenger is over hyped and and is a failure.

This dumbass has criticised Le Boss for not winning the Champions League in his time at Arsenal and that many other coaches would have won far more trophies armed with Le Bosse's transfer budget. Click to continue reading...
