Mohamed Kallon

4
We tend to follow certain former AEK players on this blog, for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes, like with Papastathopoulos, we follow them because they are a club-produced talent that gets recruited by a bigger team in a bigger country.  Sometimes, as with Dellas and Lyberopoulos, we follow them because they were AEK institutions. AEK Slip to 6th; International Action Returns

1
Making Kyrgiakos captain was not enough to limit the damage when playing the red team away, so now we've slipped to sixth.  We'll have to wait another week to move back up though, since World Cup 2010 qualifiers return this weekend. Speaking of which, former AEK star Lyberopoulos is trying to rally the fans behind the [. Click to continue reading...

Olympiacos 2-0 AEK

1
Olympiacos beat an offensively weak AEK yesterday in the second main Athens Derby of the season. This was the first week in the Superleague where AEK did not gain a point (AEK had two draws and two wins up to this point). Fortunately for AEK, its still early in the season, and there is still time [.. Click to continue reading...

Papastathopoulos starts for Genoa!

1
Sokratis Papastathopoulos, former AEK centre back, has made his Serie A debut with Genoa today. Genoa are playing Fiorentina and are currently tied 0-0 early in the second half. Papastathopoulos has apparently been playing a great game and has been marking and closing down dangerous Fiorentina striker Mutu. Click to continue reading...

AEK News, Transfers, Updates and Press Clippings

2
Alex is off on vacation and I've been busy at work, on my amatuer team AEK Baltimore (three games in three days) and nursing a nasty case of Athletic Pubalgia, so we've let the blog slide a few days. My apologies. The news has really started to pile up. AEK destroyed Turkish-side Ancaragucu on Sunday in Austria. Click to continue reading...

Papastathopoulos goes to Genoa

6
The young and talented Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has signed for Genoa, a team in Italy which currently plays in the Serie A. Many people have been expecting the move for a while but it was finalized just last night. The defender had been previously linked with Wigan but nothing ever came through with that [. Transfer News Shocker: Papastathopoulos Out, Kyrgiakos In?!?!

7
The latest reports have Papastathopoulos, the 20 year old rising star, moving to Genoa (10th in Serie A). This is hardly surprising as he has been rumored to be moving to a bigger club for more than a year now. More surprising is the news that Kyrgiakos is set to be his replacement. Kygriakos is pure [. AEK-Greuther Furth 2-2

10
AEK ended their second friendly of the preseason against German Second Division team Greuther Furth in a 2-2 draw. AEK went down early on in the first minute and by the end of the scond half they were down 0-2. Two goals however, in the 83rd and 85th minutes of the game allowed AEK to catch [...] Click to continue reading...

Pre-Season Friendly: AEK vs. Arminia Bielefeld

2
This kind of snuck up on us, didn't it? Last season finished, there was a bit of transfer news, then the Euro 2008 tournament, then very little, just the long-expected departure of Lyberopoulos. So we searched for match reports of the U-19s to get a glimpse of Pavlis or Papastathopoulos, clicked over to footballshirtculture. Click to continue reading...

AEK Open Practise

3
Yesterday evening, AEK held a practise which was open to the fans to go and watch. The team practised for about two hours. They first did various exercises such as heading the ball and ball control exercises. They then did a passing exercise for about twenty minutes. At the end, for about half an hour [. The Summer So Far

9
The Summer transfer window is not nearly closed yet, so a good bit more will likely happen. I hope so anyway. We still have some serious holes to fill. But things have slowed to such a point that there is little to write about or even link to. Saja is supposed to officially sign today, [...] Click to continue reading...

2004’s Heroes

2
The BBC has a decent "where are they now" article that looks at the Greek stars of the Euro 2004 team. For AEK fans, the article is a bit depressing. It reminds us that AEK supplied five star players to 2004 national team squad that conquered Europe. It then slowly peels the scab back and [...] Click to continue reading...

King Otto named his squad for Euro 2008 today, and AEK's Papastathopoulos did not make the final cut.  The squad contains ten players from the 2004 champions squad, including AEK's center back Dellas and striker Lyberopoulos.  Full details here. Click to continue reading...

Sky Sports Crap Journalism Misidentifies Manduca as Papastathopoulos and Gives Wrong Age

0
This article cracked me up. The picture, identified as "Papastathopoulos: Attracting Interest" is actually a picture of Brazilian Manduca Gustavo. The article also states that Papastathopoulos is 22 when in fact he is 19. Idiots. A quick fact check of this article including a thirty-second visit to AEK FC's english web-site would have prevented both [. Click to continue reading...

Greece 2-0 Cyprus

1
Greece, missing many regular first team players, fielded a handful of youth players to defeat friendly rivals Cyprus 2-0 yesterday.  From AEK, Papastathopoulos featured at Center Back making his third appearance for the senior Greek national team.  The biggest news of the day, however, centered on Panathinaikos's 18 year-old midfielder Sotiris Ninis, who netted a [. Squad for AEK match against Panionios

PAO is currently tied 0-0 with Aris in the 38th minute. AEK 1-0 Aris

I really dont know what goes on with this team. One day they put on a really poor display then, five days later, they come back and play like the champions they are. AEK played a very good game of soccer today that could have been 4-0 in favour of AEK. Each and every player [...] Click to continue reading...

AEK wins in Thessaloniki 4-0

0
AEK won what seemed a fairly easy match. The team's form seemed, from the sunday nigh highlights, to be in good shape. We saw goals from Lyberopoulos who scored from another long range effort, one from Papastothopoulos who scored his first of the season, a goal from Blanco and one from Kallon. The first goal came [. AEK 3-1 Ergotelis Match Report

0
On Sunday against Ergotelis we lined up like this: Lyberopoulos Blanco Rivaldo Edinho Zikos Kafes Georgeas Bourbos Papastathopouoos Dellas Macho And we scored straight away. Kafes, who had a brilliant game all around, drew a foul in the box. Rivaldo's resulting penalty kick easily found net. There was some commotion on the field before the penalty kick with Ergotelis players protesting that Kafes handled the ball right [. Click to continue reading...

Apollon Kalamarias 0-1 AEK

1
Look, it wasn't our best match ever, but its late in the season, and, at this point, its results that matter, not pretty football.Edinho again, this time in the 56th minute. OFI 1-4 AEK

2
We are playing well now. Â Blanco, Kallon and Edinho play very well together, with nice, tight passing, unselfish play and killer instinct finishing. Â Nsaliwa and Zikos from the midfield, and Bourbos from the right back also seem top plug in well with these attackers, overlapping when necessary, making runs off the ball and quickly covering [. How many days late with this am I? I guess just two. We played Xanthi Wednesday, lined up like this: Kallon Blanco Rivaldo Lagos Edinho Kafes Bourbos Pliatsikas Papastathopoulos Dellas Macho And though we didn't completely dominate the entire match, we played a better brand of football overall. AEK vs. Panathinaikos Preview

3
Well, we play PAO Sunday at 12 noon East Coast Time. It some ways AEK and Panathinaikos are similarly situated; we've both been eliminated from the Greek Cup and the UEFA Cup. Thus, we have only one thing to focus on the league. In other ways, though, we are in different places. Panathinaikos have [. Iraklis 0-1 AEK

1
Yesterday's game was actually two games. Getafe vs. AEK Lineup and Result

1
Well, the game is underway and we lined up like this: Moreto Nsaliwa Dellas Papastathopoulos Arruabarrena Zikos Kafes Ramos -Rivaldo Lagos Kallon Which is pretty close to what I predicted in my preview piece yesterday except Kostenoglou has gone with two defensive mids and one striker where I would have put one defensive mid and two strikers. Getafe vs. AEK Preview

After a weekend off due to a freak snow storm, AEK travels to Spain tomorrow to play the second leg of our UEFA Cup fixture against Getafe. Getafe's Cosmin Contra is predicting a win for his side. One Seriously Close Call: AEK 1-1 Getafe

4
We drew with Getafe, but our equalizer came four minutes into added time, mere seconds from the final whistle. This was a close call and does not bode well for the return fixture in Madrid later this month. We shouldn't be surprised. Something has been wrong with AEK since the beginning of the year. Click to continue reading...

Larissa vs. AEK Preview

10
We play Larissa F.C. tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th, at 9:45 am East Coast Time. I am very nervous about this match, for the following reasons. First, Larissa are no push-overs. They won the Greek Cup last year and had a okay run in this year's UEFA Cup, defeating Blackburn of the EPL in the first round before losing [. Greece beat Finland2-1. UEFA has the report. AEK's new call-ups, Lagos and Papastathopoulos, played both friendlies this week, which is a good sign for them. Oops We Did It Again

We dropped three more points, this time against Panionios. Â First, let's get the discussion of the refereeing out of the way. Â Was the referee crap? Â You betcha. Â Was he paid off?
