Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 12 (plus Serie B and other news)

2

Roma, languishing in the relegation zone before the derby, took on Lazio, who are flying high in the upper echelons of the table. Roma needed a victory over their rivals to kick-start their season and boost morale, while Lazio were looking to confirm themselves as a side to be reckoned with this season.

Palermo 0-2 Inter Milan: Zlatan Power, Express Delivery (Serie A Matchday 12)

5
José keeps his promises. On the match eve, Mourinho had said "Juve will only stay on top until Saturday evening". Said & done, Inter Milan won 2-0 courtesy of one Mr. Ibrahimovic: Zlatan was in stunning form tonight, and apparently he's been also practicing his free-kicks (his second goal was clocked at 124 km/h! Free-Kick School is in Session, Del Piero Presiding

2
Since the season started (and that's not very long mind you, only a couple of months), Alessandro Del Piero captain has not scored one, or two, or even three... but five goals on set-pieces, and one more beautiful than the next. Such deadly free-kick scoring efficiency has been the trademark of very few players in [. Click to continue reading...

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 11

3

Can anyone tell me what type of performance enhancing drug Alessandro Del Piero is taking right now? (Juventus fans don't jump on my back, that was my attempt at humor). Another inch perfect free kick, and on his 34th birthday to boot. Serie A results after "il salto" (the jump).

Daily Calcio News and Notes - 11/4/08

1

Here's what I found interesting after reading various calcio news sites today:

-First, we have another managerial change in Serie A. Chievo haven't won since the first week of the season and manager Beppe Iachini has been sacked. Taking his place will be Domenico Di Carlo, who was in charge of Parma until March of last season.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 10

0

Wow can you believe we're already at Giornata 10? I feel like Serie A was just starting just yesterday. The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly Milan-Napoli. Napoli have been the surprise of the campaign so far, led by young starlets Ezequiel Lavezzi, Marek Hamsik, and Fabiano Santacroce, and playing excellent, attractive football.

Gila’s version of the Hand of God: Did He Cheat?

1

Today the Lega Calcio confirmed the 2 game ban for Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino's goal scored with his arm. The Tuscan club had appealed hoping to have the World Cup winning striker back for Wednesday's big clash with Inter. However the appeal was rejected and Gilardino will miss out on the big game vs Inter Wednesday and the Tuscan derby with Siena Sunday.

The Time For Instant Replay Has Come.

2
Italian referees could use some damage control PR today, after managing to royally fuck up two games. In Palermo-Fiorentina, Alberto Gilardino - who is quite hot at the moment so we can maybe forgive their assumptions he'd magically huffed and puffed the ball into the net - scored with what appeared to be his hand. Is The South Rising Upon Serie A?

0
American readers quickly grasp my play on words and  Italians of course know all too well the North-South rivalry alive and well in game and nation.  This season has seen a parity of representation from both halves of the Italian nation, yet the biggest Serie A surprise thus far is a table race in which [. Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 6 (Plus Serie B + National Team Call-ups!)

0

At the end of the 6th Giornata we still saw surprises. Inter is top of the table, but they share a place with Lazio and Udinese, two squads who have been impressing in this start of the season. Both clubs are putting in good performances and don't look like calming down any time soon. Inter beat Bologna (with a splendid goal from Ibrahimovic), while Lazio needed a late equalizer from Simone Inzaghi (his first goal in Serie A in 4 years) to draw with Lecce.

Juventus 1-2 Palermo: Rosanero Exploit in Turin, Bianconeri go from Bad to Worse (Serie A Matchday 6)

5
After tonight's display between Juventus and Palermo, the (Bianconero) cynic in me has this to say: at least we didn't tie. Indeed, after three consecutive draws against Catania, Sampdoria, and Bate Borisov, Claudio Ranieri can finally get rid of the "Mr. X" tag that was bestowed upon him this past week. Fair Play Alive and Well in Serie A

1
Maximum respect to Reggina striker Franco Brienza, for reminding us what fair play looks like in professional football. You can see in the video that Brienza is through on goal and ready to strike, but lets the ball run out of play instead when he sees that Reggina team mate Bernardo Corradi and Palermo defender Federico [. Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 5

1

When looking at the schedule of the 5th Giornata, all eyes had to be on Milan-Inter. The Derby was important not only for fans of those teams but for fans of other teams, as everyone had to hope Inter were stopped. And they were stopped, as the Rossoneri prevailed with a thunderous header from Ronaldinho, who scored his first goal in a Milan jersey.

As we've reported here before, it appears USA and Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni is set for a move to Europe in January, the only question is where.

While a handful of Italian clubs (such as Cagliari, Catania, and Palermo) have been whispered to have interest, LFV friend Nick Thomas is reporting that interest is also coming from Spain's Real Betis and Malaga. Click to continue reading...

Serie A Quick Midweek Round-up: Giornata 4

3

For some reason whenever Serie A plays during the week I always feel like it isn't the same. I love the tradition of Serie A Sundays and Serie A on Wednesday just feels strange. But it's still Serie A, so I could care less because I love calcio. Giornata 4 was another great round of calcio: Inter took sole lead of the Serie A table after getting a result vs a tough Lecce side thanks to Julio Cruz, Juventus drew Catania at home and wasted many chances to get all 3 points, Milan keeps bouncing back after a win in Reggio Calabria, Roma continues to struggle after losing away to Genoa, and Fiorentina were outclassed by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 3

1

The third giornata of Serie A had less drama and surprises then the last two weeks, but it was interesting and exciting nonetheless. All the big teams won (including Milan for the first time): Inter swept aside Torino, Juventus won a tricky away game vs. Cagliari, Roma ended their "crisis" by soundly defeating Reggina 3-0, Milan finally won with a 4-1 victory over Lazio, and Fiorentina keep chugging along (with Gila scoring goals) with a win vs.
