FFA: Who's number 12.

6
The FFA handed, on a plate, the 11th spot in the A-League to a Melbourne consortium.

Hand in your plan and you get the gig. If you're from Melbourne.
No measuring alternative plans, we want Melbourne and probably Sydney and that's it.

The rest of you, Tassie, Canberra and Wollongong can well. Click to continue reading...

VIDEO: The worst call in the history of sport

35
You can watch the video, but you might not understand at first.

Even, I dunno, fish know that in soccer the ball has to go into the goal for a score to count, right?

Apparently the referees in the Reading v. Watford goal decided otherwise. In this game, a ball that goes next to the goal counts. Click to continue reading...

More Maradona news (going in Inter?)

1
There are more rumors in the world of soccer than all the other sports combined, that's why it's the most awesome.

Anyways, recent rumblings have the Argentine going to Inter in some high-office hire.

But that's not all.

His first priority would be bring son-in-law Sergio Aguerro over as well. Click to continue reading...

Forbes: MLS team values, revenue, profits/losses

3
Must read article of the year at Forbes.com. It's great to see them finally doing this with MLS, as they've been doing it for other sports for years. Based on last year's data, 3 teams made a profit (LA, TOR, DAL). Overall, not counting San Jose, the league lost $20 million with $166 million in revenue. Click to continue reading...

No news is bad news for RailHawks fans

1
For two years, RailHawks' fans have enjoyed excellent coverage of our favorite soccer team by Cary News sportswriter Tim Candon.
But TSF has learned that Tim has left the Cary News to become the editor of HighSchoolOT.com, a new local high school sports website produced in concert with WRAL and 99 The Fan sports radio. Click to continue reading...

CVAC Update 8/29/09

0
IT'S A CRUEL GAME The amazing thing about the sport of soccer remains the fact that on any given day a team can beat virtually any other team. Other sports pay this alot of lip service, but it just isn't true. In football time of possession and total yards inevitably lead to victories. The same is true of basketball and baseball where looking at shot percentage and strikeouts you can tell who Click to continue reading...

MLS Playoff Odds

5
Lots of people complain that the biggest thing against soccer is the lack of stats. Americans love their stats and honestly I can't blame them. Other sports are full of them and soccer does lack some statistical value to some people. Well, today I found a site that puts the math to the test and helps [. Click to continue reading...

Olympics Preview!

2
With the memory of the Euro 08 tournament behind us, soccer fans have another tournament to look forward to this summer, the 2008 Olympic games in China! First off let me say this: Soccer is in a different position then other sports in the Olympics. For many sports such as swimming or track and field, the Olympics is the ultimate tournament and test for the athletes to see who is the best. Click to continue reading...

the olympics mean something

0
In the next week we should get a barrage of Olympic previews. I have mixed feelings about the international ritual but the cynicism goes on the back burner for soccer, which holds my attention even through the smog marketing mayhem. I'll watch some of the television coverage of other sports thanks in large part to [. Click to continue reading...

Christian scores for the All-Stars

0

Not a lot to say other than: that's why we love Christian here in Colorado. The other good news is that Stevie seemed to know a bit better than the voters and started Christian AND Pablo. So the midfield started with Beckham, Gomez, Mastroeni, and Joseph. That gives any club in the world a run for its money.

Maryland Heights SportPort Facing Murky Future

2

From the West County Journal in St Louis comes Revenue shortfall makes Sportport's future uncertain

The problem with Sportport, city officials said, is that it has failed to draw enough revenue to keep pace with costs. Since the facility opened in 1999, the city has spent about $2.

Duece

Consider yesterday's post a double-fault. Not that I'm apologizing for my befuddlement about the media fascination over Wimbledon, but even before I read the mainly negative comments this morning I knew something was amiss. My original idea simply wasn't articulated properly and ended up coming off as petty whining. Click to continue reading...

Wenger Says Something I Agree With. World Ends in 3..2..

1

Normally, I take every chance I get to poke fun at Arsene Wenger. This is mostly because of his whiny, surrender monkey attitude, but I'll admit he can spot and develop talent better than the majority of managers in football. So when Wenger speaks, I listen. After all, I can't make fun of him if I'm not up-to-date.

Getting it

4
So this guy gets treated to a soccer broadcast that takes the game seriously and suddenly realizes that he likes it.
That doesn't surprise me. I ranted about soccer announcing years ago, for a soccer365 column called "Soccer Special Ed" where I talked about how too many U.S. announcers took way too much time to explain things during a soccer match, as if the listening audience was really ignorant. It Is An Entertainment Show

Yesterday, Matthew Yglesia's political blog took a brief and (as usual) dubious detour into the Americans-don't-like-soccer-why-is-that-oh-yes-they-do-oh-no-they-don't-it's-because-of-the-low-scoring-well-actually-are-other-sports-really-so-different-I-hate-the-diving-I-don't-like-nil-nil-draws-but-actually-nil-nil-draws-can be-quite-compelling-et-cetera-ad-nauseum debate. Tired out

1
Last week, we got into a little discussion here about soccer athlete's top-notch physical conditioning as opposed to other sports, baseball actually.

Here's a post from Paul Oberjuerge's blog about the topic of fitness. If you're not familiar with him, Paul was sports editor at the San Bernardino Sun for many years before he was unjustly fired earlier this year. Click to continue reading...

'No Easy Putts at Augusta, Dad'

2
I'VE been wasting several hours over the last few weeks playing Amen Corner at the Augusta National Club - home of the US Masters. Glorious weather every day. The soul of soccer found in a baseball game

It's the top of the ninth inning in a positively riveting 1-1 baseball game featuring the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians. Cleveland leads this best-of-five playoff series 1-0. Billy The Whizzkid

0
THE mugshot of Jack in the Touchline Dad heading reminds me of Billy's Boots or Roy of the Rovers. Not that Jack's got a blonde mullet and the cheesiest grin in Melchester. Every Friday during my final year at primary school the dinner ladies would 'divvy up' their coppers to reward the boys who helped stack tables and chairs. We each got about 30 or 40 pence which in 1978 was £2,000 - well worth abandoning the lunchtime kickabout at twenty-five past one and lugging a few tables onto trolleys. Click to continue reading...

'F' in Frankie

JACK watched his first Epsom Derby this afternoon and was excited to see the only jockey he knew - Frankie Dettori - romp home for his debut win in the famous race. He was asking lots of questions.
