A whirlwhind of Sucking

1
Hear that sucking sound? It's DC United's season ending with one trophy, the Open Cup. It's not impossible that they win MLS Cup, but it would be a sports miracle if it did. And I don't count on miracles. Since I've last written, we have lost to Saprissa at home, in [...] Click to continue reading...

Poking the Bear

You know, as much as the Open Cup has been marginalized, I'm still a bit in the afterglow--most likely as a result of the excellent images and video coming out of Behind the Badge. I suppose it also helps that Charleston put up what was, by most accounts, a stirring fight--taking the game to United in spells, rather than relying on the bunker-and-counter. Okay, you’ve got me

1
That was fun. I'd forgotten how nice it was for DC United to actually win something. Four years of hurt and the fact that I was away when DC won in 2004 meant that for me, going down on the field and seeing the players parading the US Open Cup in front of a small [...] Click to continue reading...

TROPHY!!!

1
Hi. Ed here. Even teams that win the NIT celebrate. Though I don't consider the Open Cup the NIT - and in fact, I'm kind of disturbed by that characterization of it. I want DC United to win every competition they enter - though simple scheduling and roster logistics make that wish a vast statistical improbability. Click to continue reading...

Sounders beat Portland in last rivalry match ever?

2
The Sounders and Timbers will surely play again -- most likely in the U.S. Open Cup -- but yesterday saw what will likely be the last league match between the two for a while.

Seattle won 1-0 in Portland, the Columbian has the story.

Now I've some a couple of these matches live. Click to continue reading...

Greetings from Pacific Northwest

0
Hello all, Hillcrest is up here with the team in mild-weathered Seattle. No rain so far. I thought it was supposed to be dreary up here? Tonight's game should be an interesting one. Seattle is one of the stronger teams in USL-1 each year, and with the scheduled move to MLS next year, this squad is no different. Click to continue reading...

Woah Nellie, do we have a busy one ahead of us. Tomorrow we face the Seattle Sounders (still of USL-1, for now) at Qwest Field in Seattle in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarters. Let's keep on rollin', guys. The game will be available again via www.USLLive.com. Watch all the action there.

Wednesday is a travel day, and with the three hours of time difference, the travel party will not train at all. Click to continue reading...

Chivas USA knocked out of Open Cup

1

Once again Chivas USA were prematurely knocked out of the Open Cup by the Seattle Sounders.

Not surprisingly, only six starters were included in the line up. Not sure if Preki thought the first team needed a rest.

Is this a bad thing? Should we go after every tournament? Something should be said for fixture congestion.

Open Cup Match Tonight

0
We're nearing kickoff here at gorgeous WakeMed Park in Cary, NC. The stadium is quaint and well put together. The field surface looks smooth and short, should be a good night for soccer. Michael Harrington and Kerry Zavagnin are back in their old stomping grounds, playing just half an hour (without traffic) from their college home at North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Sounds like Broken Pup

Chivas USA take on the Seattle Sounders tonight in a rematch of the Open Cup Quarters.

Details Here.

The match will take place in Seattle and the wounded (including Wicky) will not travel. Additionally Burling and Razov get a day off. I don't think there injured, and a little rest for Ante is probably a good thing.

Open wide for the Open Cup

0
I have traditionally bad-mouthed the US Open Cup as a good idea but one that's impossible to implement correctly. No matter how many times people say otherwise, it isn't analogous to the FA Cup, it's analogous to the League Cup, which teams fairly rightly don't care about. As we all know, MLS rosters are just too [. Click to continue reading...

First, take a look at Bob Luder's piece on midfielder Davy Arnaud and his long road back to health. Arnaud is expected to play at least 45 minutes tonight against Colorado. He looked very strong against Municipal Saturday.

Hey all, apologies for no posts today, it was a combination of a couple of things. Its An All MLS Final

0
In a shocking turn of events both MLS teams won their open cup semifinal games last night, making it an all MLS open cup final. I say this was shocking because most of the MLS teams in this tournament were dropping like flies, or getting annihilated like the Rapids did against the Seattle Sounders.
