Cup Anguish For European Heavyweights

0
The prospect of a fixture congestion has loosened its grip on several of Europe's household names as the continent's heavyweights bowed out of their domestic cup competitions. The phenomenon of the underdog has struck again in Spain, France and England as the reigning champions of each nation have been crushed in their search for their first silverware of the season. “How Not To Handle a Backpass,” by Rémy Vercoutre

1
Let's say you're a backup goalkeeper looking to prove your value to the team. You get your chance in a Cup game where your side is heavily favored. Your side goes down 2-0 early, but then they score a goal and put you back in the game. It's 2-1. What do [...] Click to continue reading...

Draws galore but Bayern Munich and Juventus return with wins

0
Just a quick editorial note to start, I had hoped to complete my Group Previews before Matchday 1 but that was not the case. I will still be pushing those out, hopefully finish before Matchday 2 hits. Now, on to last night's action. After absences last season for perennial Champions League participants Bayern Munich (pictured at [. Click to continue reading...

The List for France’s WC Qualifiers

0

Here's the list for our World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Austria. These games make me nervous. After watching Austria in Euros, I'm thinking that they especially are underrated and could deliver a shock. (Like they did in that friendly with Italy last week. As my co-blogger Chris said, they scored four goals!

Celtic and Lyon Begin Title Defences with Wins

2
By Alan
Soccer City FC

The Scottish Premier League and the French Ligue 1 both started last weekend with champions Celtic and Lyon opening their title defences with victories respectively.

Celtic hosted St Mirren in a scrappy encounter at Parkhead and it took a penalty by Barry Robson to claim three points for the Glasgow outfit. Click to continue reading...

Photo of the Day: Is This What They Call Team Building?

3
A lot of European teams are heading back into training. Step one? Bonding with their new teammates. And in some cases, their new coaches as well. Here we have the boys from Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) engaging in male bonding on the river with their new coach Claude Puel. Click to continue reading...

Reds Eye Wantaway Juninho

0
Liverpool have been tentatively linked with a move for disgruntled Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Juninho Pernambucano.

Juninho recently told l'Equipe that he may leave Stade Gerland this summer, as he is less than satisfied with Lyon's decision to sack Alain Perrin as coach and hire Claude Puel in his stead. Click to continue reading...

Euro 2008

Wow. 4pm on Thursday and AUT v POL is in progress now at 0-1. I'm 50% Polish, so "yay!" I'm also 25% Austrian, so "boo!" I'm also 25% French, with last name Montcalm, so "go France!"

And I'm the proud new owner of an Olympique Lyonnais jersey after my wife's trip to Paris. "Why no PSG jersey? Click to continue reading...

Kim Källström: Euro 2008 Profile

0
By: Troy Muxlow
Soccer City FC

I'd like to introduce you to another exciting footballer of the world. You might hear the name Kim Källström and think to yourself, "Is she hot?" Well the Swedes are apparently not too self-conscious when it comes to masculinity. In Sweden, Kim is a boy's name, and this boy can play. Click to continue reading...

Bayern, Real, Lyon closing in on domestic glory

0
With so much focus on the English Premier League and its dominance of the Champions League, I wanted to switch gears and take a look at some of the other leagues in Europe.

We start in Germany, where FC Bayern München took their first step towards a treble with a win in the DFB Pokal (German Cup) final against Borussia Dortmund. Click to continue reading...

Gimme those predictions: Champions League Round of 16, Leg 2

2
Tuesday, March 4th AC Milan vs. Arsenal (0-0) The Gunners could go either way - too young, inexperienced to win at San Siro or young enough to not care or allow intimidation to get in the way of beating Milan at home. Wait...but is anyone telling Alexandre Pato to be nervous? Click to continue reading...

Round of 16 Predictions

2
Here are my picks to go through to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool v Internazionale
Olmypiacos v Chelsea
Roma v Real Madrid
Schalke v Porto
Arsenal
v Milan
Lyon v Manchester United
Fenerbahcev Sevilla
Celtic v Barcelona

I could see Roma or Fenerbache advancing from their matches, those two ties were the hardest for me to pick a winner.

Man United’s keeper optimistic about domestic and European glory

1
Just like last season this time around, Manchester United are on a roll and have every reason in the world to believe they can repeat another historic treble, maybe even a quadruple. Will Stuttgart continue to sink?

0
The stakes are high for Stuttgart heading into Matchday 3. They have lost their opening two games, they sit joint-bottom (with opponents Olympique Lyonnais) of their group. Another loss for either side would make progress to the knockout rounds highly unlikely. Defender Ludovic Magnin and striker Ciprian Marica will miss the tie against Lyon on Tuesday with minor muscle injuries. Click to continue reading...

My Champions League Predictions for Wednesday

6
I wasn't too bad on my predictions from yesterday. I forgot to factor in 'referee error', which is probably why I got the Liverpool-Porto and AC Milan-Benfica results off. I'm not so sure that was a penalty for Porto and if it was, then Liverpool deserved the same later in the match. With their horrid play, the Reds had no business winning the fixture anyhow, but I should have known better than not to consider they were playing in Portugal. Click to continue reading...

The Madman's preview: The Champions League Group Stage (part 3 of 4)

0
(Part 1 and part 2)

Group E - FC Barcelona, Olympique Lyonnais, Rangers FC, & VfB Stuttgart

Winner - Once again I've heard this group referred to as 'the Group of Death', but I have little doubts that Barça will come out on top. Wouldn't it be great if every club had a Thierry Henry to step in if your Samuel Eto'o gets injured? Click to continue reading...

A Look at Lyon

2
This is the first in a series of quick profiles of some of the clubs involved in this year's Champions League. We start with a look at defending Ligue Une champions Olympique Lyonnais.

As in past seasons, Lyon have watched some of their top talents leave for "bigger" clubs (though higher wages and lower taxes are generally believed to be a contributing factor). Click to continue reading...
