Freddy Adu's AS Monaco faces their stiffest test of the season when league leader Olympique Lyon travels to the Rock tonight looking for three points. Adu looks set to start the game on the bench but look for Monaco to throw the kitchen sink at the Lyon juggernaut if they want to salvage at least a point. Click to continue reading...

Into the Lyon's Den

1
Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann is preparing for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Olympique Lyon with the pressure already mounting on the former German national team boss.
The German champions are off to their worst start to a Bundesliga season in 31 years, winning just two of their opening six games as Klinsmann's side followed up a 5-2 home hammering by Werder Bremen with a shock 1-0 loss at Hanover at the weekend. Click to continue reading...

UEFA Champions League Draw - the only really interesting league in Europe

3
Attached is a link for the UEFA Champions League draw, the only truly interesting league in Europe. The reason that I say that is very simple, what other league in Europe has so many teams that could possibly win it? None of the other leagues are even close. In the English Premier League, how many teams really have a shot at winning it? Click to continue reading...

Ranking the UEFA Champions League groups by degree of difficulty

4
By now you probably know about UEFA's group stage draw for their signature club event, the Champions League (cue that stupid music they adopted as the Champions League anthem). We could just cut and paste the groups like a lot of other bloggers did, but seriously, what good would that do you, our loyal readers? Click to continue reading...

Monaco: Still Interested in Bradley?

9
Yet another twist in the Bradley transfer saga as the deadline approaches in just five days. After there seeming to be much interest from Monaco for Heerenveen's American midfielder Michael Bradley a few weeks ago, they then focused on Betis Seville's Marko Babic as a new offensive option. This morning here in Europe, word has come out on Footmercato. Click to continue reading...

Bocanegra, Rennes Draw Marseille 4-4 In Wild Finish

5
France's Ligue 1 got underway tonight as 19 teams try to break Olympique Lyon's 7-year grip on the championship. American defender Carlos Bocanegra anchored the central defense for Stade Rennais in a battle with traditional power Olympique Marseille. It did not help matters that going into the match, star striker Sylvain Wiltord had been suspended after criticizing coach Guy LaCombe in an interview with L'Equipe. Click to continue reading...

Paris St. Germain sign Makelele and Giuly

3
Some interesting news from the French Football League as Paris St. Germain have signed both Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly for next season. On the surface these seem like good signings, but I think it might be about time that Paris St. Germain start to develop a more long term plan for success. They have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe by playing in Paris with virtually no competition in terms of other big clubs to draw fans away from them (unlike London or Moscow for example). Not Just Yet…

0

As most of us already know, Hatem Ben Arfa has come to terms with Olympique de Marseille and for some of us, our worst fears have finally been realized. Like an amorous relationship you know just has to end, as much as it may hurt, you know it's for the best. But HBA's departure still stings, and leaves me with an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach, necessary as it may be.

Steaua Bucharest: Upset Special

0
Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest don't get much press, playing as they do in unfashionable Eastern Europe, but this club has the look of Jose Mourinho's old Porto sides - disciplined when in their own half, crafty and wry on the attack, and generally full of spit and vinegar. The way they manhandled Dynamo Kiev in their UEFA Champions League Group E opener a fortnight ago opened a few eyes around Europe, but I suspect many think they're still a notch below Olympique Lyon and Real Madrid.
