New Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko may face punishment from Tottenham because he's not learning English quickly enough according to the Russian newspaper, Tvoi Den. The Dutch team gave Bert van Marwijk a warm welcome in their first international game together against Russia in Moscow. John Terry to go for gold in London 2012?

0
Old-new England captain John Terry looks like he has got a chance of competing in the Olympics even if a Great Britain side do not enter the football tournament. The Chelsea man's post-Moscow penalty shootout trauma does make him look uncannily like a synchronised diver. For all his flaws on the field, we never thought JT could be accused of being a diver. Cristiano Ronaldo returns to training with Manchester United

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson raised the possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo signing a contract extension with the club on the day he returned to training.

Ronaldo confirmed earlier this week he would remain at Old Trafford this season at least, after Real Madrid failed in their attempts to sign the player this summer, although he did reaffirm his desire to play for the Spanish champions at some point in his career. Click to continue reading...

Zeljko Kalac’s Rough Day

Conceding five goals is rough, real rough. Whiffing on the ball that winds up as the sitter for the third is downright brutal, particularly when the game was televised for our enjoyment. Paris St. Germain sign Makelele and Giuly

3
Some interesting news from the French Football League as Paris St. Germain have signed both Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly for next season. On the surface these seem like good signings, but I think it might be about time that Paris St. Germain start to develop a more long term plan for success. They have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe by playing in Paris with virtually no competition in terms of other big clubs to draw fans away from them (unlike London or Moscow for example). Hleb's quotes + Ramsey's quotes + win tickets to the London Masters

Some very strange comments from Alexander Hleb to kick the day off. The Belarussian has been linked with a move away from the club all summer and stories this morning suggest he's not going to be the most popular man in town.

He is reported as saying:

Can We Reasonably Expect a Commitment from Ronaldo?

1

As always, take this with a grain of salt, but supposedly United are looking for a commitment from Ronaldo to stay at the club. For ever and ever. Until the end of time. Which in today's volatile global oil market might only be a few months away.

Of course United are offering piles of cash in return.

Memo to Spain: I Appreciate You.

0
So, I've been feeling a little churlish all day, like may be the ramble below did not give Spain due credit. To be honest, I was so disappointed in Russia—who were worse today than the counterfeit Stolichnaya I drank in Moscow in 1996—that I was not sufficiently impressed by Spain. I just watched the highlights, and feel the need to make amends: la Furia was, at least a moments, great. Click to continue reading...

Arsenal manager to sign a Russian or two this summer?

1
Arsene Wenger might be taking a leaf out of Fagin's book this summer. Alan Hansen: Holland and Portugal no match for Germany's winning mentality

Anyone who was at Innsbruck watching the Russians being taken apart by Spain in their opening group game would have advised them to start booking an early flight back to Moscow. But tournament football does not work like that. Holland and Portugal set Euro 2008 alight with some fabulous football which, when it came to booking a place in the semi-finals, proved no help at all.

World Club Rankings - Top 25 - 1972

4
1972 saw Total Football become entrenched in Europe as Ajax tried to become the first club to repeat as continental champions since Inter Milan pulled the trick in 1964 & 1965 by facing that team in the finals. Two second-half goals by Johan Cruyff were all that were necessary, actually the first one was all that was necessary, as Ajax defeated Internazionale 2-0. Click to continue reading...
