USWNT Wins in Virginia … Obama Will be Next!

0
Having been asleep at the switch on the soccer front for awhile, I was pleased to receive a Google Alert about the USWNT's most recent win.  This one coming in Richmond, VA, where South Korea fell to the USWNT.  Vic Dorr, Jr. describes the game in the Times Dispatch.  Sounds like Angela Hucles continues her [. Sounders win a wild one

1
You have to check out Goal Seattle's report of the game.

Apparently after a 2-1 Sounders win over Montreal in the first leg of the first round of the USL playoffs, the Impact coach went into the stands at Starfire and was getting into it with the fans.

The match was testy too, with a bunch of cards and chippiness. Click to continue reading...

Final USL-1 Attendance Numbers

3
Unofficial, of course. Montreal leads the league for the fourth straight year. Miami was up almost 100%, but still at the bottom of the league. Atlanta continues to prove that a new stadium alone doesn't get it done. Minnesota got a bit of a bump moving from St. Paul back to Blaine. Portland had an outstanding [. Friday links: Reform here and there, DeRo blogs

1

Left out of the headline: "Touchy in Toronto." But that theme will turn up here as well.

- Crew math: If you're wondering why today's story on Columbus didn't say in so many words that the Crew have clinched a playoff spot, it's because a Columbus Dispatch reader came up with a far-out scenario in which they would, in fact, not advance.

Sounders drop season finale, Cascadia Cup

0
(Rick Morrison for Goal Seattle with the photo, if you couldn't tell)

It was a pretty inconsequential game in the standings, Seattle and Vancouver had already qualified for the playoffs, but the Cascadia Cup was lost.

The Northwest derby might not be around for awhile, so it's sad that the Sounders couldn't hold onto it until then. Click to continue reading...

RailHawks finish 8th as 2008 season comes to close

0
With the final results of the USL-1 season coming in Sunday night, Carolina is now officially the sole owner of 8th place in the USL-1 table. Atlanta did indeed lose on Sunday night, the result that the RailHawks would have needed to make the playoffs, if only Montreal could have drawn with Minnesota on Saturday, we would have secured a playoff spot. Montreal IMPACTS, Santos SURVIVES, Marathon SHOCKS

2
More of Matchday One in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League was played last night...
  • Montreal continued the USL's domination of this competition. Okay, that's overblown, but what you're hearing out of some of the USL supporters after both Puerto Rico and Montreal won their opening matches over teams that dispatched MLS teams in the qualifying round.

Down, But Not Out

0
Carolina's hopes of making a last ditch run at the playoffs suffered a serious blow Sunday evening when they drew 1-1 with the Rochester Rhinos. After leading 1-0 from the 7th minute when Dan Antoniuk set up Hamed Diallo for his 5th goal and 13th point since joining the RailHawks on July 9th from the Rhinos (both team highs), the RailHawks conceded an equalizer when Ross Smith headed in a free kick from Luke Kreamalmayer in the 83rd minute. CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Roundup: Whoa Canada

4

Canada is in serious trouble.

There is no other way to put it after the Canadian national team dropped a 2-1 result against Honduras in Montreal on Saturday night. The loss left Canada with just one point from two home qualifiers in what is easily the toughest group in CONCACAF.

Sportsnet streams Canada vs Honduras

53
Just in case I failed to mention it here before, Sportsnet will be streaming tomorrow night's WCQ vs. Honduras from Montreal. As for regular TV coverage, the schedule is the typical convoluted Sportsnet mash of times and delays that requires a PhD in media studies to unravel. The must-win for Canada game will be streamed live on [. Click to continue reading...

More From Portland

Crap. Working in post secondary education means that this is the craziest time of the year for me...and always the worst time to update a blog. The USL has earned some crowing privileges

5
Without a doubt, USL fans should be gloating that their two sides in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Montreal and Puerto Rico, managed a win and a road draw while MLS' Chivas and New England both lost their first matches. I am not about to read too much into this on a larger level except to say [...] Click to continue reading...

Champions League Preview

1
The time has come for North America's answer to their European counterpart. The Champions League begins tonight. In this space I will rank and give a brief preview of the eight preliminary matchups. Several of the teams come from leagues that have played internationally very little over the past few years, so those teams will be unranked. Click to continue reading...

Diallo hattrick not enough as 'Hawks lose wild one in Seattle

0
Hamed Diallo tallied 3 goals for the RailHawks inside 55 minutes Sunday night, but it wasn't enough as Carolina fell 4-3 in a back-and-forth affair. After going down 1-0, Carolina twice came back to the lead the match at 2-1 and 3-2 before eventually losing.
To make matters worse for the RailHawks, both Montreal and Miami ran out 3-0 winners against Atlanta and Charleston, respectively giving those two teams 3 more points ahead of Carolina and dropping the RailHawks back to last place in the USL-1 standings. Click to continue reading...

Canada's tie means more stress and little relief

4
Canada's tie to Jamaica last night on its surface is nothing to be ashamed of.But being in a group with Mexico and Honduras finds the Canadians playing the role of scavenger, forced to seek out two lost points in what some are saying is Concacafs group of death.

Season not yet saved (Cary News)

A week ago, the Carolina RailHawks season was on life support. After Fridays 3-2 win over Miami, their condition can be upgraded to critical.
The three points earned last week are vital to the RailHawks chances of salvaging their season, but they are not in the clear yet. The win got the RailHawks out of the USL-1 cellar and into 10th place. Click to continue reading...

That was supposed to be a play on Manifest Destiny. You know, with the expansion and all?

MLS Rumors got the hot tip on which two cities are looking to be added by 2011:

Carolina 0-2 Montreal

1
Mother always told me if I didn't have something nice to say, I shouldn't say it...so for now (at least), I'll stick to the facts...
Carolina lost 2-0 to Montreal on Friday night. David Stokes was ejected for the 3rd time in the last 10 games he's played for the RailHawks. We've now lost 4 on the trot and are winless in 9 (10 including the Tecate Cup friendly against Monterrey). Click to continue reading...

MLS Expansion - Canadian teams the favorites

4
I've enclosed a link to an article from ESPN ad its been widely reported that MLS will add 2 more expansion teams in 2011 and it seems like the front runners are Montreal and Vancouver. I've written about this before and I stand by my opinion that I think it would be a really good idea to add teams in Montreal and Vancouver, assuming that MLS will have the same type of impact in those cities that its had in Toronto. EXPANSION: Beckham Bucks May Mean Miami Gets MLS Fast Track?

4
This comes to us from a very credible source within US soccer journalism who wishes to be anonymous:

Obviously keep my name out of this but I'm hearing MLS is seeking investors for Miami. I'm not sure if this means Beckham/Fuller or they are looking for a backup plan. MLS I have heard thinks on reflection they rushed to pull the plug on the Fusion because of a non-soccer fan investor who owned that club (Horrowitz) who didn't know it would take time to build.

So much for Toronto

I'm not a TFC supporter but even I'm starting to get frustrated.
