FIORENTINA

2007/2008 was a good year for Viola fans. Well, it wasn't just a good year, it was a great year. Fiorentina, led by great performances from key players like Frey, Gamberini, Montolivo, and Mutu, ended the season in 4th place, gaining Champions League qualification for the first time since the days of Batistuta and reaching the semi-final of the UEFA Cup.

Casiraghi's Under-23 side start the Games with an easy win, thanks to a wonderful goal from Giovinco and penalties from Rossi and Acquafresca. The Central American side missed a chance from the spot: Pavon sent his penalty over the bar. Italy defeated Honduras 3-0 in their first group match of the 2008 Summer Olympics and got off to a great start. Pierluigi Casiraghi actually surprised many with his starting XI, as Salvatore Bocchetti started alongside Domenico Criscito in the center of defense, Lorenzo De Silvestri started over Marco Motta on the right, and probably the most surprising change was Robert Acquafresca starting in front of Giovinco and Rossi instead of Tommaso Rocchi.

As many people expected, the odd man out for the Azzurri is Riccardo Montolivo. The 23 year old midfielder had a chance of staying since Perrotta was injured, but Perrotta is 100% fit and therefore Montolivo was deemed surplus to requirements. The young midfielder will now most probably play in the Olympics this summer, and he will definitely be a main fixture for the Azzurri after Euro 2008 because he is really talented.
