Wednesday: Cups of all kinds

1

Just in time for today's story about the Puerto Rico Islanders' dual runs to the USL regular-season crown and the CONCACAF Champions League group stage, they go out and beat Mexican power Santos in pools of standing water Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Houston traveled to Panama's Rod Carew Stadium and eked out a 0-0 draw in what MLSNET's Dylan Butler notes is the first of four Dynamo games in four countries over the next 12 days.

REPORT: FC Salt Lake? Houston Lone Star? A Look Back at Names That Didn't Stick

19
Ah, the names that might have been....

While we wait for Philadelphia to decide on a name we look back on some attempts to name or rebrand current MLS clubs.

Yes we all laughed at Penn Jersey Independence FC but there are other names which could have stuck elsewhere around the league. Click to continue reading...

REPORT: Worst MLS Club Name Ever?!

22
For many years, many MLS fans have bemoaned the name of one club or another but what we have discovered makes, in our opinion, all current, and former MLS club names pale in comparison in terms of poor quality. This happened today while conducting a deep investigation into Philadelphia MLS club names that are or have been bandied about. Click to continue reading...

More on Non-Aztex Soccer

0
Here's a follow-up to my recent post about where one could get one's soccer fix after the Aztex season finished. While I still miss the games out at Dragon Stadium, it's hard to argue there's not enough soccer to keep a fan busy.
  • Stoke City - their season is underway, so there are games every weekend.

For all 135 previous MLS team seasons. They are from left to right:

Shots, shots on goal, fouls committed, fouls suffered, offsides, corner kicks, yellow cards, and red cards. The last five years for reds aren't listed with the others on MLSnet, so I'll have to go through and figure them out at a later time. Click to continue reading...

Please Leave The Lights On News

Brian McBride is all set to join Chicago when he returns from the Olympics. Chicago paid cash, a draft pick and forward Chad Barrett to Toronto for the rights to McBride. Did they pay too much? I don't think so.

MLS Original Players

The domain transfer hasn't fully gone through yet (I'll call tech support as soon as I finish my coffee), but I saw this post by Luis and had to respond. He noted that, with Guzan leaving for England, Francisco Mendoza is the only player currently on Chivas USA's roster who was there from the beginning, and put it out to his readers for the others.

Josh Wolff as my MLS Yardstick

11
Josh Wolff's return to the Kansas City Wizards and MLS in general is of particular interest to me.

First of all, I must admit that although I am a rabid American soccer fan, I'm at most a peripheral MLS fan. Some of that has to do with the fact that I live in Germany, and thus I am not putting on airs when I watch the Bundeslia and cheer for my local team, 1860 Munich (who unfortunately play in the 2. The CONCACAF Champions League groups have been chosen, and neatly summarized by Mr. Bueno at Sideline Views. Over at MLSNet, it is summarized as "D.C. What a career it's been for Santino Quaranta -- and he's only 23!

So You Want To Be a Caption Writer?

0

Check out the caption on this photo that ran with the KC-LA match writeup on MLSNet. Pardon my math, but Conrad's red (the first for the Wiz) came in minute 57, which seems to me to be two-thirds of the way through the damn match. So, were they playing in some weird dimension where space-time is warped? How does one-third equal "most" of the match? Click to continue reading...
