CONCACAF Champions League kicks off tonight

The New England Revolution and Chivas USA will kick off the first round of the first annual CONCACAF Champions League tonight with the Revs facing Trinidad & Tobago champions Joe Public while Chivas USA is in Panama to face Panamanian champions Tauro FC.

This year marks the first playing of the CONCACAF Champions League, a tournament featuring 24 teams rather than the eight teams featured in the tournament's original version, the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

CONCACAF Champions League To Begin

The inaugural CONCACAF Champions League begins this week, with eight Preliminary Round first-leg matchups taking place August 26-28. Twenty-four teams will battle it out between now and April 2009 to decide who will be crowned the first-ever CONCACAF Champions League champion and receive the honor of representing North America at next year's Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Weekly Rankings - Week Something

The rankings got a pretty big shakeup after Aguila of El Salvador destroyed Juventud Independiente 10-0. This win rocketed Aguila to the top of the rankings and reminded me that my computer formula still has a lot of flaws.

The game of the week was won by San Luis against Tigres 1-0. San Luis dropped one place (due to the miracle game mentioned above) and Tigres dropped 5 places to eighth. Click to continue reading...

Fernandez, Knighton loaned out

The New England Revolution announced today that forward Argenis Fernandez and goalkeeper Brad Knighton have been loaned out to LD Alajuelense (Costa Rica's Primera División) and the Portland Timbers (USL First Division), respectively, for the remainder of the season. Chivas USA learned its group opponents in the CONCACAF Champions League today (providing it gets by Panama's Tauro FC first).

From the (edited) Chivas USA press release:

The winner of the Chivas USA vs. Tauro F.C. pairing will play Santos Laguna of Mexico, either Municipal or Deportivo Jalapa of Guatemala, and the winner of the preliminary round matchup between LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica and the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL First Division in Group D.

CONCACAF made known today the Group Stage matchups after letting us know the preliminary round last week.

6/16/2008 - CONCACAF announced today the complete schedule of match-ups for the Preliminary Round and Group Stage for the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League™.

CONCACAF has also confirmed the kick-off times under Eastern Standard for both the Preliminary Round and Group Stage with the exception of several match-ups that are listed as TBD (to be determined) because teams competing for that slot are in different time zones. Click to continue reading...

Revolution will play Joe Public in Champions League

It sounds like a joke, but the New England Revolution have been drawn against Joe Public FC in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions League. Joe Public FC is actually a real team and they are two time champions of Trinidad & Tobago. They played DC United in 1998 in the Champions Cup - DC United beat them 8-0 on their way to winning that Champions Cup.

2008-09 Concacaf Champions League preliminary round schedule

Sixteen teams now know their opponents for the preliminary two-leg round of the first ever CONCACAF Champions League. Come August, these teams will fight it out to win a spot in the group phase, which starts play in September.

As far as the preliminary round, first leg matches will take place sometime between 26-28 August with the second leg to follow the following week (2-4 Sept). Click to continue reading...

Multiple reports are stating that Costa Rican striker Victor Nunez may be signing on to be the latest addition to the New England club.

The 27 year old striker currently plays his football for Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense.
