USWNT Wins in Virginia … Obama Will be Next!

2
Having been asleep at the switch on the soccer front for awhile, I was pleased to receive a Google Alert about the USWNT's most recent win.  This one coming in Richmond, VA, where South Korea fell to the USWNT.  Vic Dorr, Jr. describes the game in the Times Dispatch.  Sounds like Angela Hucles continues her [. Wow!

0
That's really it, just WOW! The Phillies' bats came alive in a real big way last night, as they blew the Rays out 10 to 2. Tonight's game five, still in Philadelphia, could be the end of the Series! It's great to see Ryan Howard producing the way we know he can. And how amazing was that [...] Click to continue reading...

Help, I’m Stranded on Second - Save Me! Save Me! (Just a Bad Dream, Phillies Fans, Really!)

0
How many base runners have the Phillies stranded now?  I guess the glass-half-full perspective would be that they're creating chances and will start cashing in eventually.  (Just hope "eventually" comes within the next couple of games!)  According to the NY Times the Phils are 1 for 28 with runners in scoring position - and Ryan [. What English Football Team Does John McCain Support?

Sorry Sox … and Straight Talk Express

2
It was a good run, Red Sox ... but now it's up to the Phillies to take the devil out of those Rays, I guess.  A rested Philadelphia team meets the Rays in Florida for game 1 on Wednesday night.  Here's hoping for either a good, exciting, long Series or (my personal favorite) a four [...] Click to continue reading...

Will It Blend?

0
No baseball to report on.  No debate.  I am forced to move to Plan B.  (Don't try this at home.) What brought me to this?  It began with my morning visit to Woot - a site that HollyCornblog turned me onto some years ago. I check it first thing and sometimes find really good deals.  [...] Click to continue reading...

Phillies Clinch and McCain Continues to Tank

0
It really wasn't a contest at Dodger Stadium last night ... and wasn't one at Hofstra, either. The Phillies clinched their sixth-ever World Series berth in just five games, with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers, behind good offensive production and the strong arm of NLCS MVP Cole Hamels!  I'd love to see them face the [. In an absolutely brilliant move, World Soccer Shop has launched a line of official Nike USA 2008/09 soccer jerseys featuring the Democratic and Republican Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidate for the upcoming United States election. All shirts feature the candidate's last name and the number 1. Click to continue reading...

McCain Unmasking Monday, Tech Tips, and Soccer Sundries

1
The Time Finder posted information about some great computer shortcuts this morning - along with a link to the NY Times article by David Pogue.  Who knew, for example, that you can use Google like a calculator?  And here's a cool tip that I found in the "Comments" - A little less known one I enjoy [. Of Debates, Bailout Deals, and World Cup 1998

Not to get too political (my Obama post almost got called out at a family get together this week), but does anyone remember when Ronaldo 'got sick' in the lead up to the final at France 98, and then 'miraculously' appeared at the last minute only to get utterly trounced by Aime Jacquet's superbly organized French youngsters, 3-0 in the final? The Administration That Cried Wolf, McCain’s Mental Status, the WPS, and Happy Birthday HollyCornblog!

Lots to write about today ... and let me start with what's been nagging at me ever since this whole Wall Street debacle became the latest national emergency.  I keep thinking, "What if this really is an emergency?  Bush certainly looked terrified last night in the clips I saw of his address to the nation. Forza Famagusta

1
This fantastic piece on the Champions League's obscurities, aside from its own merits, took me back: to the days when I would burrow into two- and three-week-old British newspapers that somehow washed ashore in the University of Montana's crypt-like Mansfield Library. This was before John McCain invented the Internet (or, as we called them on their advent, "The Wires"), and European football existed on the same approximate American consciousness level as Bhutanese politics. Joel Santana is feeling the heat

0

The national squad's performances isn't impressing the FIFA head.

Sepp Blatter, president of world soccer governing body Fifa, says he is "really disappointed" at the abysmal showing of Bafana Bafana, and plans some straight talking with local soccer bosses on the issue.

An implicit condemnation of Joel Santana's managerial career.

McCain Beyond the Palin - Even Turdblossom Decries the Lies

1
Yes, it's true.  Turdblossom (aka Karl Rove) has spoken out about the excesses of the McCain campaign ads.  To my mind the fact that he would do this publicly speaks, not to any new found sense of decorum or fair play in the doughy sleazeball, but to the fractiousness and internecine warfare within the Republican [. In which Russell Brand tries the unified field theory

3

Football (the real deal) aka soccer is what the US does not get. And US politics is what the world does not get. Eight years of misery and John McCain still gets a stinking chance in hell becoming the president even as he has aided and abetted the Bush regime to the utmost. Even as is his presidency will result in saving only those who don't remember how many homes they possess.

It’s Biden (Why Not Pia)?!

14
I opened up MSNBC this morning and saw the news that Obama has picked Biden. Probably a smart move ... experience and gravitas and whiteness and all. I was kinda hoping for something more interesting - but would rather win. So Biden seems good. Biden I can live with. (But wouldn't [...]SHARETHIS. Click to continue reading...

Italy: A Special War of Words

0
I have no ties to any teams in Serie A, but I have a feeling I'll be following Inter Milan a lot more closely this season thanks the ongoing brilliance/antics of Jose Mourinho. The Times of London likened the Special One to Barack Obama this week in terms of his status as a media darling.

The war or words between Obama and John McCain may carry more weight this fall, but likely won't be as entertaining as the one brewing between Mourinho and AC Milan boss Carlo Ancellotti. Click to continue reading...

McCain’s Geography (and Internet Travels), Hillary’s VP Chances, and (Of Course) Some USWNT Soccer …

6
John McCain made another Bush-worthy geography gaffe yesterday - this time on "Good Morning America." Sorry, John, Iraq and Pakistan don't actually share a border. (As an aside, I've always wished that some brave member of the press would ask Bush, during a press conference, to point to Iraq on a map. Click to continue reading...
