These two teams met in their opening match of the tournament, with Spain convincing 4-1 winners. Since then, Russia had surprised everybody by not just recovering but improving enough to demolish the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, while Spain had been winning withut exactly bowling people over.

Player of the Day: Sergio "Hot As Balls" Ramos. All over the place, stuffing Russian attackers, hassling Russian defenders. Probably the first game he's played up to his capabilities this tournament. And I love defenders with an identity crisis, particularly hybrid rightback-strikers.

Spain made it to the Euro finals after 44 years. So long ago it came during Francisco Franco's iron fisted rule, an era abhorred and overturned by thousands who have made Spain, a beacon of democracy and social progressivism.

Today's match against Russia turned out to be anti-climactic as Guus Hiddink's team was a shadow of itself, tentative and tremulous.
