Scotland vs. Argentina: Maradona’s expected starting XI

17
In 1994, when Diego Maradona played his last match for Argentina, you could have got very long odds on him one day becoming the manager of the national side. What about the likelihood that his first match in charge would take place against the same country he scored his first senior international goal against? Click to continue reading...

Argentines Abroad: the last weekend P.D.

3
That's 'Pre Diego', for those who can't work it out. The Argentina manager and most of his squad have arrived in Glasgow and begun training for Wednesday's friendly against Scotland in the city where Maradona scored his first senior goal for his country, back in 1979. It makes sense, then, to take a quick look at [. Click to continue reading...

Argentines Abroad: weekend of the 9th November

3
There's been an award for an Argentine player in MLS, a bucket-full of goals for Argentines in Italy, the captaincy of the national team bestowed upon Javier Mascherano in England, another goal for Fernando Cavenaghi in France, and plenty of goals in Mexico too. The headline act of the weekend, though, was in Spain: Gonzalo Higuaín continued [. Click to continue reading...

Argentina squad to face Scotland - official

40
The squad as expected by the Argentine press (and subsequently here) prior to Diego Maradona's first press conference as Argentina boss yesterday turned out to be not quite accurate, so here's the list as announced by the man himself in that press conference, along with a bit of opinion (my own and others') on it. Argentines Abroad, and Maradona’s first squad

16
The AFA will hold their press conference in a few hours' time to allow Diego Armando Maradona to announce his first Argentina squad (read on to see who's made it), and already there's controversy surrounding the nature of the appointment (not to mention the exclusions of three key players). Maradona declared on Radio La Red [. Click to continue reading...

World Cup qualifying: self-examinations, and my own two centavos

1
On Thursday, the Argentine squad went their separate ways as they returned to club duty following Wednesday night's pathetic surrender to neighbours Chile in Santiago. Speaking at Ezeiza airport before flying back to Barcelona, Lionel Messi own up to his own mistakes frankly, whilst Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze did likewise. Click to continue reading...

World Cup 2010: Chile 1 - 0 Argentina

13
After finally ending a run of six matches without defeat in a 2-1 win over Uruguay on Saturday, Argentina followed it up on Wednesday night by losing to trans-Andean neighbours Chile for the first time ever in a competitive match. It was a win Marcelo Bielsa's team thoroughly deserved, and followed on from Paraguay's one-goal [. Click to continue reading...

Chile vs. Argentina - the possibilities

6
As ever, Coco Basile won't be revealing his starting XI until very shortly before kick off in Santiago, but with Juan Román Riquelme having rejoined the Boca Juniors squad to prepare for Sunday's superclásico following his suspension and with Carlos Tevez also ruled out, it's thought after the team's final training session at Ezeiza on [. Preparations for Argentina vs. Uruguay

4
Friday is the last full day of training for Argentina's squad ahead of the World Cup qualifying clásico against Uruguay in the Monumental on Saturday. It's been a disrupted week for Alfio Basile's men but on Thursday, Juan Román Riquelme returned to training with the squad. Things aren't all quite to plan so far, though - [. National news

1
Two pieces of news regarding Argentine selecciones today, both of which took place on Sunday whilst the league action was going on. In the Brazil 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup, Argentina drew 2-2 against Ukraine in a frantic end to a highly entertaining match which saw all the goals come in the closing minutes (in spite [. Figueroa arrives, and the foreign contingent are named

0
Two bits of news for Tuesday: Boca Juniors' quest to find a replacement for Martín Palermo during his long-term injury layoff has come to an end with the signing on loan (with a US$1.5 million fee should Boca wish to make the signing permanent) of former Central and River Plate striker Luciano Figueroa from Genoa. Argentines abroad: 27th & 28th September

4
The new season is now a few weeks old in Europe, so I thought it was about time we had a look at the contributions of some of Argentina's foreign legion in the European leagues. So far Sergio Agüero and Gonzalo Higuaín have enjoyed great starts for the two Madrid sides in Spain, whilst in [...] Click to continue reading...

Monzón Gets First Callup

1
Luciano Monzón and Diego Milito were the two newest players to be called up by national team coach Alfio Basile for their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against neighboring rivals Uruguay and Chile. Monzón has been one of the outstanding performers so far in La Liga this season.  His biggest came earlier this week when Betis headed [. Click to continue reading...

Heinze Gone From Albiceleste?

1
Gabriel Heinze's days with the Argentine national team could be numbered after his fallout with Alfio Basile. His dreadful performance against Paraguay, his horrid own goal and his reaction to be subbed in favor of Getafe's Daniel Díaz will most likely leave him out of the upcoming call up that will occur in October. World Cup 2010: Argentina 1 - 1 Paraguay

3
It was second versus first in the Estadio Monumental on Saturday afternoon, as Argentina hosted leaders Paraguay in the South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. Evra: I Did What I Had To For Heinze’s Place

2
It's hard to think back to the time when Gabriel Heinze was a greatly loved member of our squad. He was a ferocious player who never shied away from tackles and loved to get stuck in. "ARGENTINA!" was the chant that would go around Old Trafford every time he put the ball, and the man, [...] Click to continue reading...

Silvestre v Heinze

0
Alex Ferguson would have rather slit his wrists than sell Gabriel Heinze to Liverpool last summer, but was more than willing to let Mikael Silvestre go to Arsenal yesterday.

I had thought that Arsenal would strengthen their backline over the summer, but it looked as if Wenger had ruled out a new centerback two months ago. Click to continue reading...

The Shock Heard Round The Prem

3
Let's just say at this point in his career, the only way Mikael Silvestre could've generated more press attention is if he was found nude doing lines off Fergie's ass with a transsexual rodeo clown down a dark Mancunian alley. Thankfully for us - and especially the good people of Manchester's alleys - he's decided [. Click to continue reading...

The Argentine friendly I missed

0

So, maybe I forgot or just didn't do my homework but last night Argentina played Belarus in Minsk in a friendly.  Well, I really didn't miss much. Despite the presence of first team regulars Tevez, Burdisso, Cambiasso and Zanetti the albicelestes could not take advantage. The score ended up being 0-0 with few chances at goal by Argentina.

Argentina starting XI vs. Belarus, 20th August 2008

To avoid any possible confusion should anyone be typing in terms to search engines looking for Argentine national team news today, I'll start by pointing out that this has nothing at all to do with the Olympic Football Tournament. Onyewu To PSG?

Argentina squad vs. Belarus, and Dátolo to Flu?

Liverpool Fury At Losing Ryan Babel

Rafael Benitez is set to lose a third first-team squad member for the start of the new season after it emerged that Ryan Babel is almost certain to compete at the Olympics.

Argentina starting XI vs. Brazil

Alfio Basile has named Argentina's starting lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Brazil in Belo Horizonte, and it includes both Juan Román Riquelme and Lionel Messi. South Korea Do As They’re Told - No Olympics For Park

Sir Alex Ferguson strongly promotes a club over country attitude, which is usually adopted by the players in his team. Gabriel Heinze is a player who used to be adored by the Old Trafford crowd. Chants of "Argentina" could be heard every time he played.
