Germanys football player of the year!

And Domenech Calls Up…You’ll Never Guess

5

I don't know why I'm surprised by these Raymond Domenech decisions anymore.

Actually, come to think of it, I'm not surprised by these Raymond Domenech decisions anymore.

Raymond lost a DM, a center/leftback, and a rightback this week to injury Lassana Diarra, Julien Escudé and Bakary Sagna.

Bradley Header Saves Point for 'Gladbach

4
Michael Bradley's Borussia Moenchengladbach had a real challenge today in trying to claw out of the relegation zone facing powerhouse Bayern Munich. The visitors jumped on top early on a 21st minute Luca Toni goal for a 1:0 lead. A 45th minute Bradley header from a Marko Marin free kick, which could have tied the game for the Foals, just missed sending both teams to the locker room with Bayern up 1:0. Franck Ribery vs. Luca Toni

The Sync: Bayern 1-1 Lyon

1
Blue days at the Allianz Bate and Bayern had the same idea in the second halves of their respective matches. Hold on for a home draw. However unlike Bate, Bayern Munich happened to be one of the 10 richest clubs in the world. Lyon visited the Allianz tonight and scraped by with a 1-1 [...] Click to continue reading...

Into the Lyon's Den

1
Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann is preparing for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Olympique Lyon with the pressure already mounting on the former German national team boss.
The German champions are off to their worst start to a Bundesliga season in 31 years, winning just two of their opening six games as Klinsmann's side followed up a 5-2 home hammering by Werder Bremen with a shock 1-0 loss at Hanover at the weekend. Click to continue reading...

Bayern vs. Lyon Preview

0

Since Lyon have only one point so far - from a home game at that - it's crucial that they walk away with at least a point tomorrow evening in Munich. With Fiorentina taking on Steaua in Italy, it's likely the Italians will get three points, so unless Lyon want to hang out in the bottom of the group, a good performance tomorrow is a must.

Premier League - Everton vs Liverpool When: Saturday, Septemmber 27, 12:45 GMT Where: Goodison Park Why: Some early afternoon red vs blue action in the Merseyside derby. Query.

1
So Landon Donovan may go to Bayern Munich, eh? My trusty volume of Wikipedia informs me that Bayern's current squad includes Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose at forward, with attacking midfielders such as Franck Ribery and Ze Roberto.

Where does Landon fit in all this? Click to continue reading...

Franck Ribery’s Daughter applauds Werder Bremen

10
Here's Franck Ribery's daughter applauding Werder Bremen, after they just made it 5-0 against Bayern Munich this weekend. Seems Franck or his wife have done a good job teaching her either the concept of fair play or sarcasm. In the worst case we'll soon see Paparazzi photos of Franck or Wahiba buying Werder Bremen fan [. Click to continue reading...

Painful Lessons

0
Most teams have a theme song they blast out in the dressing room before they take the field in a bid to get the blood pumping. Former England defender Stuart Pierce used to subject his fellow Nottingham Forest colleagues to "Anarchy in the UK" by the Sex Pistols at ear-splitting volume before they took to the field of play. Don’t @#$% With Franck Ribery’s Money

1
Agents are, shall we say, less than favorable people. To be an agent one doesn't have to be exceedingly brilliant, but being a charlatan, swindler and wielding questionable morals at best are almost prerequisites. So when you hear stories like Franck Ribery's, it puts a little kick into your step. Franck canceled his deal with [. Click to continue reading...

Landon Donovan to Bayern Munich?

5
According to this article on Sports Illustrated's website, Bayern Munich were interested at one point in signing Landon Donovan and may still sign him during the winter transfer period. The article describes how Bayern's manager Jurgen Klinsmann was interested in signing Landon, but the Board of Directors were concerned because of Landon's previous experiences in the Bundesliga. Apologies for starting this year's Bundesliga blog off with an entry based on ugly rumours (by which I mean allegations and not ex-British PM Tony Blair's ill-fated Stones-esque college band).

Bayern Kicks Off Bundesliga Season

0
Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich kicked off the new Bundesliga season with a 2-2 tie with Hamburg. Bayern who were playing without Luca Toni and Franck Ribery wasted a 2 goal lead. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski scored to give Bayern a 2-0 lead only 19 minutes into the game. However, Guerrero scored for Hamburg in the 25th minute, and Trochowski scored in the 57th minute Click to continue reading...

Call Ups for Sweden-France

2

Les Bleus will be traveling to Sweden for a friendly on August 20th, a game which will hopefully get the team ready for the World Cup qualifiers that will be starting soon.

There a lot of old faces on the squad, but there are also some players missing, including Franck Ribery and Francois Clerc, who are out injured, and Samir Nasri and Eric Abidal, who were dropped entirely.

Sneak Peak Benzema Screenshots from FIFA 09

I already posted about how Karim Benzema's face will be gracing the cover of the eagerly anticipated FIFA 09 video game (he and Wayne Rooney will apparently be on the European covers, with Franck Ribery as the "main" guy who appears worldwide).

My question is, why does Benzema look different in every picture?

Paris St. Germain sign Makelele and Giuly

3
Some interesting news from the French Football League as Paris St. Germain have signed both Claude Makelele and Ludovic Giuly for next season. On the surface these seem like good signings, but I think it might be about time that Paris St. Germain start to develop a more long term plan for success. They have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe by playing in Paris with virtually no competition in terms of other big clubs to draw fans away from them (unlike London or Moscow for example). Benzema on Cover of FIFA 09

I don't play video games. I've never owned a gaming system, nor have I ever wanted one. Online Literati is about all I'm capable of.

But from what I understand, soccer video games are huge. A lot of people use "Football Manager" as a way to judge players, and there is even a section of the Offside devoted to video games.

Ribery Is Gone Till September

The injury sustained by French international Franck Ribery in the team's loss to Italy during the final phase of the group stage during Euro 2008 will cost the midfielder to miss the start of the 2008-2009 Bundesliga season.

Mo Money, Mo Targets

Luiz Felipe Scolari, from now on here at the Offside known as Uncle Phil, hasn't even taken over at Chelsea yet. That hasn't stopped the rumor mill, and it's continued ridiculousness, from churning out obscene amounts of transfer speculation regarding the club. A whole heap of numbers is being thrown around, but the one popping up the most is £100mil.

Euro 2008: Day 11

1
Italy 2-0 France
Au revoir, mes enfants. You got the feeling it wasn't going to be France's day when Franck Ribery had to go off injured after just 8 minutes, having messed up his ankle in by getting tangled up with Gianluca Zambrotta. Ribery has been one of the few bright spots for France in this tournament, although I do think that Samir Nasri, who came on as his replacement, deserved more playing time as well. Domenech's timorousness sinks France

0

Thierry Henry loves to get cute in front of goal. All flashes and finesse touches. And today he scored a stunning goal just that way. Unfortunately, it was into his own goal as he stuck out an instinctive foot to a Daniel De Rossi free kick and deflected it neatly into the right hand corner.

Au Revoir

Farewell then, France. Last night had been an evening that promised to hit a crescendo of tension, excitement and drama, but in the event the evening in Zurich all went off like a firework display in a monsoon, with a French selection and performance that gave Italy a relatively comfortable ride through to the quarter-finals, whilst in Berne the Dutch comfortably found a way past a Romania side which, three games in, finally showed up the shortcomings that many had suspected would lead to them being one of the tournament's lame ducks before so much as a ball was kicked. USA Player Development:The Debate Continues, Part 4

Watching France labor to a goalless draw against Romania yesterday got me thinking about the debate on player development in the USA. Why?
