Ronaldo Turns Down €100,000 per Goal Comeback Deal

1
The great Ronaldo comeback (part IV, approximately) is still going to happen. We think. But it won't be happening at Siena after Ronaldo turned them down, despite rumours of a €100,000 per goal offer. His agent broke the news to Siena fans none too gently: "Everyone would like to have a player like Ronaldo on his team [. Click to continue reading...

Thrilling Derby Weekend In Brazil Masks National Team Failures

0
Dunga may not have many friends in Brazil right now given his struggle to win the public's affection as national team coach, but last weekend he could at least look back and reflect on the Campeonato Brasileiro's fixture list as an ally of sorts. After accumulating an awful record of just three points from three home games during World Cup qualifiers in 2008, without managing a single goal in the Click to continue reading...

Rosario Central President Horacio Usandizaga Threatens to Kill All His Players

0
Sometimes footballers need a little extra motivation. Goal bonuses, win bonuses, that sort of thing. Just a little carrot to dangle in front of their noses to make them reach that extra bit harder. Argentina's Rosario Central are a team in need of such motivation, as the once great club currently occupies one of the [. Click to continue reading...

Flamengo and the Boo Boys - Should Fans Boo Their Own Team?

0
So it appears Ashley Cole was booed by a section of England fans in the recent 5-1 win over Kazakhstan. Big deal. Generally speaking I am not a fan of the boo boys, whose impatience is rarely if ever helpful for the team. Unless it is in circumstances that really warrant it I am of the opinion that, as a supporter of whatever club, fans should try to support and encourage the team at all times, Click to continue reading...

There are many great derby games in the world of football. Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. AS Roma and Lazio. Flippin' The Bird - Club Nicknames and Bird Symbolism

4
What's in a name? Well plenty to be honest. The name of a football club, the colors and emblem they use, the nicknames they're given - all of these can explain a great detail about how the club is seen by its fans (and rivals) and can give insight into local history and culture. While some are rather straightforward, others are absurdly convoluted, others just absurd. Click to continue reading...

Flamengo Fans Attack Players With a Bomb

0
I still can't get my head around this. Booing your team is one thing, but attacking them with home-made explosives is something else. Certain Flamengo "fans" were so unhappy with the team's performance recently that they took a home-made bomb to a training session last week and threw it at the players. Click to continue reading...

Bombs over Brazil

1
I've said it before and I'll say it again: South Americans take their football pretty seriously. Apparently none more so than fans of Brazilian Serie A side Flamengo who, during a protest against the team's recent poor form, decided to show how frustrated they really were. You know, in these circumstances it's customary for fans to chant abuse, or make obscene banners, but this hardcore group of Flamengo fanatics actually threw a BOMB at the team during practice yesterday morning, injuring two players; defender Dininho and striker Obina. It's time for the post-Copa Libertadores version of the World Club Rankings Top 25. Obviously, the big news since the last ranking is the historic victory by LDU Quito in the Copa Libertadores. Thanks Juninho, it's a good story anyway...

1
This week, according to the Courier Mail, Juninho withdrew from the Roar v Palmeiras game on 12 July. Why? because the Roar decided not to sign 19 year old Bruno Mezenga? The Roar are not a charity.

Juninho played for Palmeiras and Mezenga's club Flamengo (he was fired in 2005). However, Mezenga has struggled to retain a place at Flamengo and has been unable to regularly score goals while on loan for lower placed clubs. Click to continue reading...

Boavista relegated for corruption

The Portuguese League has kicked Boavista to the second division and punished Porto with a six points deduction because of their involvement in soccer corruption during the 2003/04 season.
Porto officials have been found guilty of having attempted to bribe referees in two League games, but the six minus points will not greatly upset the team, who lead Sporting by 20 points with a game to go. Click to continue reading...
