Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 6 (Plus Serie B + National Team Call-ups!)

0

At the end of the 6th Giornata we still saw surprises. Inter is top of the table, but they share a place with Lazio and Udinese, two squads who have been impressing in this start of the season. Both clubs are putting in good performances and don't look like calming down any time soon. Inter beat Bologna (with a splendid goal from Ibrahimovic), while Lazio needed a late equalizer from Simone Inzaghi (his first goal in Serie A in 4 years) to draw with Lecce.

Fiorentina 0-0 Steaua Bucharest: Viola Hit A Romanian Wall (UEFA Champions League 2008-09)

2
Second consecutive draw for Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League. The Viola could not do better than a 0-0 result on Tuesday, blocked by a tough & well-organized Steaua Bucharest side, surprising not only in their disciplined defensive organization but also with their fair share of technical players (above all, António Semedo, Banel Nicolita, and [. Bayern vs. Lyon Preview

0

Since Lyon have only one point so far - from a home game at that - it's crucial that they walk away with at least a point tomorrow evening in Munich. With Fiorentina taking on Steaua in Italy, it's likely the Italians will get three points, so unless Lyon want to hang out in the bottom of the group, a good performance tomorrow is a must.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 5

1

When looking at the schedule of the 5th Giornata, all eyes had to be on Milan-Inter. The Derby was important not only for fans of those teams but for fans of other teams, as everyone had to hope Inter were stopped. And they were stopped, as the Rossoneri prevailed with a thunderous header from Ronaldinho, who scored his first goal in a Milan jersey.

Fiorentina 1-0 Genoa: Gilardino Rebirth Continues, Viola Fly (Serie A Matchday 5)

0
Reverse engines, full 180º, nitro boost. After his team's brutal mid-week loss to Lazio, Cesare Prandelli must have found the right words to remotivate his men Saturday. A battling and determined Fiorentina side, led by the continued moment of form of a reborn Alberto Gilardino, brushed their Genoa visitors aside and went on to take [. Click to continue reading...

Fred Interview

0

One of my least favorite subjects- aside from ethnic cleansing, and life threatning diseases- is Lyon's resident brat, Frederico Chaves Guedes Fred. Fred recently gave an interview in French on OL's website. Since they didn't offer an English translation- and annoyingly, OL doesn't offers translations for alot of their articles- I thought I'd share a verbatim of the interview.

Serie A Quick Midweek Round-up: Giornata 4

3

For some reason whenever Serie A plays during the week I always feel like it isn't the same. I love the tradition of Serie A Sundays and Serie A on Wednesday just feels strange. But it's still Serie A, so I could care less because I love calcio. Giornata 4 was another great round of calcio: Inter took sole lead of the Serie A table after getting a result vs a tough Lecce side thanks to Julio Cruz, Juventus drew Catania at home and wasted many chances to get all 3 points, Milan keeps bouncing back after a win in Reggio Calabria, Roma continues to struggle after losing away to Genoa, and Fiorentina were outclassed by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

Do Lyon Have Goal Scoring Woes?

1

According to L'Equipe, this is Lyon's best league start to a season since 2001/2002. Unbeaten in all their games, with five wins and a draw, they are already four points ahead of second placed Marseille. And despite having a defense that would make even the bravest of people whimper with fear, Lyon conceded only two goals so far, giving them the best defense in the league.

Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 3

1

The third giornata of Serie A had less drama and surprises then the last two weeks, but it was interesting and exciting nonetheless. All the big teams won (including Milan for the first time): Inter swept aside Torino, Juventus won a tricky away game vs. Cagliari, Roma ended their "crisis" by soundly defeating Reggina 3-0, Milan finally won with a 4-1 victory over Lazio, and Fiorentina keep chugging along (with Gila scoring goals) with a win vs.

Champions League and UEFA Cup Roundup

0

Terribly sorry that I didn't post yesterday, but I've been uber busy. Anyway, since there's no national news, let's turn our attention to club news.
Champions League
Fiorentina tied 2-2 in their CL Group Stage opener with Lyonnais. The game was full of controversy, and you can debate until you're bluer than Tobias Funke over whether Lyonnais' first goal was valid or not.

Lyon 2-2 Fiorentina: Alberto Gilardino Strikes Twice… But the French Get Back (UEFA Champions League 2008-09)

3
Fiorentina had the French "Lion" almost tamed. In their nth rendez-vous with top European football (since the 2001-02 season, OL have won 7 consecutive Ligue 1 championships), Lyon started the match at ferocious pace, but after a couple whip-cracks by Alberto Gilardino (coupled with an almost flawless Viola defence) the beast had stopped roaring. 10 Things I Learned from Lyon vs. Fiorentina

6

In lieu of a proper match review, I present you with this. Match highlights and photos at the end of the post.

1. When picking Brazilians, it's Ederson you want. Leave Fred behind with the rest of the garbage.

I don't mean to come off as a Fred hater, but did he accomplish ANYTHING in today's match - besides the countless times he squandered easy shots on goal?

Lyon Don’t Do Fair Play

1
I suppose if winning is everything, there's nothing wrong with that. However, there's an unwritten code in football that if an injured player is down on the pitch, you put the ball out of play for him to receive treatment and be escorted off. No can do for Lyon, who not only played around him, [...] Click to continue reading...
