Champions League Matchday 4 Roundup with Video Highlights

1
Note: When we do our searches for the ever-elusive game highlights, we have to take what we can get. (And we do it with much gratitude to the people who manage to evade the Video Police and host them.) But the ones we find are not always perfect. There's a good chance that [...] Click to continue reading...

Champion's League: Night of The Greeks

3
Two Greek teams surprised everyone last night scoring a combined six goals and picking up four points from stiff competition. Werder Bremen fell to Panathinaikos 3-0 while Inter Milan, down 3-2 to Anorthosis well into the match, managed to salvage a point and finish 3-3.

OK, so I blew the call on the Inter-Anonthosis match but I think keepers Julio Cesar (Inter) and Arian Begaj (Anorthosis) combined for one of the most noteworthy goalkeeping displays we've seen this year. Click to continue reading...

Holy suckin' Roma Batman (UCL round-up)

0
Man, I never woulda had Roma losing to Cluj, a Romanian side, at home.

Christian Panucci had the favored side up 1-0 with a header in the 17th minute, but Emmanuel Culio bagged the next two with goals at 28' and 49' to give the visitors a shocking win.

It wasn't undeserved either, the underdogs played well enough to win and deserved the three points in Group A. Click to continue reading...

Disillusion for FC Basel, Shakthar wins 2-1

Chances are that it won't be the same glorious campaign as 6 years ago for FC Basel - an early home defeat to Shakthar appears to compromise the possibilities of the Swiss Champions not so much for the score, rather for the way Basel played: the team was entirely absent Click to continue reading...

MLS Trading Deadline & Roster Freeze Date Looms

5

In just under 24 hours as I write this, at 5 p.m. Monday, MLS rosters will be set in stone for the rest of the season, until the day after MLS Cup.

Which means, incidentally, the Galaxy will be stuck with $130,000 a year defender Eduardo Dominguez ("he was all we could afford," one team official allegedly told a colleague of mine).

The Wednesday Wrap: Lucky, lucky Liverpool

3
Though we were not impressed with Liverpool coming into the season (a view that was not exactly expunged by their first few performances on the pitch), we didn't think qualifying for the Champions League would be anywhere near this difficult. We shrugged off the scoreless draw in the first leg as an anomaly Stevie G and co. Click to continue reading...
