a complete disaster

2
Simple and straight-forward, "disaster" is the only way I can describe the unexpected collapse as Lithuania defeated Romania 3-0 in Cluj. The absence of Cristian Chivu, Adrian Mutu, Razvan Rat and Florentin Petre was obviously too much for Victor Piţurcă's squad to deal with as the visitors completely dominated play. Glenn Roeder has today called Newcastle United a tragedy going from one disaster to another. A banner day for MLS

9
Too bad that banner says "WE SUCK" Look, there are a million good reasons why Chivas lost to a Panamanian team tonight and New England did the same to a Trinidadian one. But I hope this tournament, and the disaster it's starting to look like for the MLS teams participating in it, finally prompts the league [. Click to continue reading...

Reina Does Not Expect More Heroics

1

Pepe Reina is confident it will not take more goalkeeping heroics for Liverpool to overcome Standard Liege on Wednesday.

The Spanish stopper had to be on top form to keep a clean sheet during the first leg in Belgium, thwarting a penalty just minutes after a superb goalline save.

Arena in the kitchen

0
Somehow Bruce Arena struck me as a bit of a foodie, though I never heard much more about his taste in cuisine other than "he likes a good steak". Simply from the hotels that he approved for the U.S. national team, one could surmise that Arena liked to pick from the best options available. Nothing too remote and spa-like, though, usually something in the heart of the city (often with a good steakhouse on site). Click to continue reading...

Cisse Stars for Sunderland

1
Talk about immediate impact. French international Djibril Cisse, on a season-long loan from Olympique de Marseille, scored the game winner against Tottenham Hotspur. Cisse's header in the final minutes of the match sent Spurs' supporters home with thoughts of last year's start-to-season disaster freshly entrenched in their minds. Click to continue reading...

Everton News: Tiago turns down Everton to leave the Toffees stuck

Everton will be left reeling from the latest news that Tiago Mendes has turned down a move to Goodison Park on a season long loan. Mendes has been a flop for Juventus and Claudio Ranieri was keen to offload the midfielder.

It's the latest unwanted Everton news, as their summer in the transfer market turns into a disaster. Click to continue reading...

Welcome Back Lippi. Now Fix Our Team

1

Let's not pull any punches. Yesterday was a disaster for the Azzurri. Yes, it was just a friendly. No, that doesn't mean it's ok. It was a sub-par performance by a team (And not just any team- we are the world champs) that hasn't scored from open play in 5(!) games. It's entirely unacceptable. Let's break down the game, see what went wrong, and how we could possibly fix it.

Not a fan

2
What can I say, I'm not a fan of Bruce Arena. He did well with the US of course but he certainly is not the mastermind many made him out to be.

Here's my PE column that I wrote about Arena's supposed grandiose tenure with the US national team.

I guess I tried to counter some of what Tim Leiweke said about Arena, that the was the best coach in this country or something to the effect. Click to continue reading...

FC Twente v Arsenal - Match Preview

4
The pre-season jockeying is over for Arsenal, tonight Arsenal face arguably the most important game of the season.  Failure to progress to the Champions League group stage would be a disaster both financially and in terms of the club's standing in European football. Arsenal travel to FC Twente managed by former England manager Steve McLaren, knowing [. Click to continue reading...

Sangre americana preview: Hernandez

2
Daniel Hernandez was a bad boy. It wasn't his play - which actually was pretty solid a year ago. It was his temperament that led to his downfall. That and his teammates' inability to keep their tempers in check.

After a brawl broke out in the Jaguares-Cruz Azul playoff match a year ago, Hernandez and several of his teammates were slapped with suspensions to start the Apertura 2008 season. Click to continue reading...

Your Favourite Team’s Favourite Team (part 2)

0
You might or might not have noticed that after a delightfully modest rundown of our opening week fortunes, the last fortnight has been somewhat devoid of Boafista updates. While I have realised just how much you good people will be fiending to know how my 5-a-side team has been doing (thanks for the threatening e-mails), we've, er, not really performed too well so I've kind of glossed over the follow-up reports. Persitara. Again

1
I had been determined not to team this team again as they slide from disaster to disaster in the nascent season but this one is too good to miss.

Club officials were told by the ISL governing body going into the weekend's fixture with Persela that they had two choices.

Play the game without police permission and risk going to jail. Click to continue reading...

TFC ties San Jose, lost momentum and direction

Toronto FC 0 San Jose Quakes 0

Well it was tough to walk away from the stadium with a scoreless tie, but it could have been worse. It is a sad indication of this floundering season that the levels of disaster had been created and ordered before the game against San Jose had even begun. Click to continue reading...

Friendly Fire

10
The pre season is in full swing now with the SPL clubs getting their preparations for the season fully underway. A quick roundup: After the disaster of the Intertoto Cup Hibs were held to a no scoring draw against Raith. Good news for the Hibs fans: There was a mystery triallist in goals. Bad news for the Hibs fans: He was 24 year old Phil Imray of Team Wellington in New Zealand. Click to continue reading...

U.S. Leading Scorer Abby Wambach To Miss Olympics With Broken Leg

0

Abby Wambach, the top scorer for the U.S. Women's National Team broke her leg in the final game before the Olympics against Brazil Wednesday in San Diego, and will miss the games in China.

"Obviously, it's devastating, but above everything else, I'm only one player, and you can never win a championship with just one player," said Wambach, a resident of Hermosa Beach.

Kapo - Touch of Quality

2

Olivier Kapo, 27, has joined a different club in England, switching from Birmingham City to Wigan. Wigan manager Steve Bruce, who will be Kapo's manager for a second time, said Kapo has a touch of quality about him.

We'd seen some of that quality when Kapo had chances to play for France (he has 9 caps), but his move to Juventus was a disaster.

Roar 3 v Palmeira 1 - dig the new breed

0
The Roar came out at full speed for the first 20 minutes and could have had 3 or 4 goals early. As we know, the Roar are at their best this way. Very entertaining for the crowd of 14,000. (Photos are 'the game stops for Thomas Oar' and 'Charlie Miller about to surprise and delight').

The first half was a showcase for new strikers Sergio van Dijk (very strong in the air and with the ball to his feet - put a left footed swivel turn just over the bar from outside the box) and Tim Smits (good in the air, scored a looping header and looked fast enough to cause an A-League defence havoc - but slowed into the 2nd half) and full back Luke DeVere (great in the air but with clearly a lot to learn about controlling strikers and their runs). South Africa 2010: Is it safe?

3

At BigSoccer, Bill Archer hurls the rock at the hornet's nest by suggesting that the 2010 World Cup is simply a disaster in the making, citing such inconveniences says as financial unrest, electrical problems and rampant crime.

The case against Archer's argument: South African tourism surged past the 9 million visitor mark last year, at least according to one friendly calculation.

Nugent Explains Why His First Season At Portsmouth Was A “Disaster”

0
Not surprisingly to Portsmouth fans, David Nugent is now admitting that his first season was a "disaster". Recently he gave an interesting interview explaining what happened last year, and his plans for the future. Nugent said: "Speaking on a personal level, last season was a disaster, really. My fitness, my injuries, the lack of games [. Click to continue reading...

Hibs Endure Euro Misadventure

0
The sun didn't shine on Leith yesterday. In fact it rained on Rod Petrie's latest European parade. Another drookit Intertoto disaster. Before the game Mixu didn't so much dampen down expectation as concede defeat. And so it came to pass. Now the players are back far too early and the club has a pointless trip to Sweden to contend with. Click to continue reading...

UEFA makes another mistakes

0

While one of the greatest European Championships just wrapped up, UEFA is doing their best to make sure the next couples are a disaster. The executive committees of soccer's European governing body have decided to expand the field from 16 to 24 teams by the 2018 event. By doing this UEFA is going to water down the tournament.

Crystal Method Lays Out Red Bulls

3

For the average Red Bulls supporter, a loss in a meaningless tournament to a bunch of unknowns would mean nothing at all. Who even knows who Lamar Hunt is anyway right? But to those who have lived through Metro disaster after disaster, a loss to a subpar USL2 franchise is yet another notch in our histories ever growing dissappointment belt.

It won't happen again, promise

1
Yeah, right. But it already happened, so the damage has been done.
UEFA apologized for the blackout during Wednesday's semifinal match between Germany and Turkey. A freak storm caused this freak incident which, officials say, won't happen again.
That's of little consolation to viewers around the world. Click to continue reading...

Frank Dell'apa Removed From Soccer Coverage At Boston Globe

8
Sorry, this could not wait until later:

Yesterday on Brad Feldman's weekly New England Revolution podcast, In The Net, Frank Dell'apa of the Boston Globe announced that he has been removed from covering the Revs & soccer! WTF? He has been re-assigned by the paper to cover the Celtics. This is a massive loss to the soccer community not just in Boston, but all over America. Click to continue reading...
