WCR Top 25 - Principles, Purposes and Criteria

0

For quite a while now, I've been getting questions and comments about the WCR Weekly Top 25.  Some weeks, I try to go into a little detail regarding the purpose and reasoning of the rankings, but it becomes cumbersome to try to give explanations and principles on a weekly basis.

Fatty Vasco de Gama Players Face Fines

0
Vasco de Gama are in trouble. The usually pretty successful club (they've won a Brazilian championship in every decade since the '70s, and the Copa Libertadores in 1998) are currently in the bottom four of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, so if the season ended right now they'd be relegated to Série B. The concepts of the game are universally renowned at every level, from watching our stars dazzle the pitch through a flash of virtuosity on our TVs or simply playing five-a-side down the local pitch with our friends. The ultimate objective? To be triumphant through scoring as many as goals as possible and thereby beating the opposition. Click to continue reading...

HISTORY: Flashback Friday - CONCACAF and InterAmerican Cup Winners - DC United

2
As many of us MLS fans were in angst over the pathetic performance of our clubs in the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League this week, perhaps it is only fitting to turn the clock back to 1998 and take a look back to an MLS team which, a decade ago, won not only the CONCACAF Champions Cup but then went on to beat the Copa Libertadores Champion, Brazil's famed,Vasco da Gama, in the final match of the final Copa Interamericana. What's Going On . . . in all these Super Cups

0
This is the Super Cup season and its coming to an end. They go by different names, e.g., Community Shield, Recopa Sudamericana, etc., and they tend to come in two forms – domestic and continental. In the domestic versions, they usually take place a week or so before the beginning of the regular season and serve as a tune-up for the upcoming season. Click to continue reading...

Palermo arrives at a record

In a glorified all-Argentine continental pre-season friendly, Boca Juniors hosted Arsenal de Sarandí in Racing's ground on Wednesday night, in the first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana, played between the winners of the previous year's (not season, confusingly) Copas Sudamericana and Libertadores. Boca ran out 3-1 winners after an early flurry saw them leading 2-1 after [. Click to continue reading...

What's Going On . . . in the Recopa Sudamericana

Yes, we are talking about the Recopa Sudamericana – not to be confused with the Copa Sudamericana, which is also going on at the moment and in which the same two clubs participating in the Recopa have or will also participate.

What is the Recopa Sudamericana? The Recopa Sudamericana is the South American equivalent to the UEFA Super Cup. Click to continue reading...

Monday

19:45 Hamilton v Dundee Utd, Scottish Premier League, Setanta Sports 1
Given the dominance of the Old Firm, the SPL is often pegged as a weak league. World Club Rankings - Top 25 Clubs - 1981

5
In 1981, for the third time in five years, Liverpool took home the Champions Cup trophy. This time Liverpool won the title by defeating Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris, France on an 82nd minute goal by Alan Kennedy. As was the case in 1978, however, Liverpool was unable to secure the top spot in the World Club Rankings in 1981, despite the European Championship, because of a fifth-place showing in domestic action. One in a row wasn't enough for Ajax, Bayern Munich or Liverpool; what makes you think it would be enough for Nottingham Forest? If your answer was "nothing," then you are correct. The 1980 European Champions Cup saw Nottingham Forest not only reach the final at the Bernabeu in Madrid, it saw Forest defeat Hamburger in the final 1-0 on the leg of John Robertson, who scored the match's only goal in the twenty-first minute. Superliga - Sports Illustrated article

A little bit of history: Orestes Omar Corbatta

Superliga should be Champions Liga

I've been reading about the different results from the Superliga, the tournament between top clubs from MLS and the Mexican Primera División and I can think about our - where are the rest of the CONCACAF clubs? Liverpool was unable to follow in the footsteps of Ajax and Bayern Munich with a third consecutive Champions Cup title in 1979 as they fell in the first round of the tournament to fellow English club Nottingham Forest. WCR Weekend Soccer Television Schedule - July 19, 2008

6
Last week, I believe I said that the Superliga was the most exciting thing going on over the weekend. Even though the group stage of the Superliga concludes this weekend, now that D.C. United has been all but mathematically eliminated from the tournament, I'm not so excited about it. TeleFutura will be broadcasting the last matchdays of the group stage on Saturday and Sunday, but I'm more excited about the Uruguayan Copa Artigas, which concludes this weekend, so we will soon learn which Uruguayan teams advance to the 2008 Copa Sudamericana and which advance (in addition to Defensor Sporting) to the 2009 Copa Libertadores. Barcelona enter Thiago Neves sweepstakes

2
If you've been following this blog or Latin American soccer you should be very familiar with the name Thiago Neves. The Fluminense midfielder notched a hat trick in the finale of the Copa Libertadores--ultimately in a losing cause, as his club lost to Ecuador's LDU Quito.
"Thiago is a 23 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder who was capped a few times by Brazil's Under 23 national team but somehow was never signed by a European club.

World Club Rankings - 1978 - Top 25

Following in the footsteps of Ajax and Bayern Munich, Liverpool repeated as European champion in 1978. This time they did it by continuing their dominance over Borussia Monchengladbach, who they defeated in the 1977 final and the 1978 semifinals, and over Club Brugge, who they defeated in the 1976 UEFA Cup final and again, 1-0, in the European Cup final at Wembley Stadium, with Kenny Dalglish providing the winning margin in the 65th minute. When it comes to controversies, Oscar Ahumada has been the first one on the list lately.
