Liga de Quito wins Copa Libertadores

4

In a two-game series that saw 10 goals scored you wouldn't expect a goalkeeper to be the hero, but Liga de Quito goalkeeper Jose Francisco Cevallos was just that for Liga. Cevallos made three penalty kick saves to help Liga de Quito beat Brazilian club Fluminense, 3-1, in penalty kicks to capture the Copa Libertadores title last night at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

Lippi Takes Over as Italy Coach Again

4
ROME (AP)—Marcello Lippi gave up a life of leisure to return as Italy's national team coach, less than two years after guiding the Azzurri to their fourth World Cup title.

"Naturally, I'm very happy to pick up where I left off. But picking up where I left off also means that the Euros didn't go so great, or I would still be on the beach in Viareggio," the well-tanned Lippi said at a news conference Tuesday, referring to his hometown on the Tuscan seaside. Third-place playoffs are normally lackadaisical affairs where no one really cares who wins. But when you're Urawa Red Diamonds and Étoile du Sahel, and never really had a chance of winning the Club World Cup against the likes of Boca and AC Milan, then the third place playoff suddenly becomes a lot more important and [. A Little Bit About the Club World Cup

So when was the last time an entire team was arrested after a match for their behavior on the pitch? I'm not sure, but I think it may have been in 1969, after an Intercontinental Cup (precursor to the Club World Cup) game, with the Argentinian team Estudiantes de la Plata. "Following a very violent [. Click to continue reading...

I've said this before and I'll say it again: FIFA have got in for Oceania. Big in Japan 2: Electric Blogaloo

I was all prepared to rant today about Steve McClaren's supposed decision to switch to a 4-3-3 formation against Russia tomorrow, for the sole purpose of shoehorning Frank Lampard back into the lineup, and what an absolutely boneheaded idea that was. But now it seems that he's decided to not be a complete moron and stick with the 4-4-2 that's been working for them up till now, so you've been spared. Click to continue reading...
