Smith Installed as Coach; Mastroeni Re-signed

6
In a widely anticipated move, the Colorado Rapids today announced that Gary Smith is to be the permanent head coach. Smith took over interim coching duties in August after the resignation of former coach, Fernando Clavijo, and narrowly failed to get the team into the playoffs. Click to continue reading...

Live from RFK

Hola DC fans: Check Steve for all the latest injury news, but in a phrase, "the list is long and distinguished." I will keep my pessimism to a minumum, but I think the Clavijo'less Rapids steal a point here. Prediction: 2-2 Click to continue reading...

Clavijo Resigns From Rapids

1
Fernando Clavijo, the head coach of the Colorado Rapids, has resigned with immediate effect from his position. Like the death of a sick loved one, the news comes as a shock but not exactly unexpected. Rumors had been flying for some time, especially after the recent meltdown at the Los Angeles Galaxy when Ruud Gullit and Alexei Lalas said goodbye. Click to continue reading...

Head for the Rockies

0
The Wizards head west down I-70 to Denver to take on the Colorado Rapids tomorrow night. The Wizards come in after holding off Chivas USA 3-2 at home last Saturday, while Colorado comes in having lost 1-0 at home against Toronto FC. Colorado's fans' spirits are low with the way that the team has been planning and that Coach Clavijo is still in charge of the team after their poor performance of late. Click to continue reading...

REPORT: Clavijo Leaves Colorado For Uraguay

2
....For a family emergency. This of course comes just hours after Steve Goff reported a meeting took placed between the Colorado Rapids and Clavijo in which Clavijo thought he was sure to get the sack.

In the days of the old Soviet Union, much was gathered about the secret goings on of organizations behind the Iron Curtain by paying keen attention to timing of travel, "sick" relatives, timing of press releases, "ill" leaders and the like. Click to continue reading...

More Action Off the Field Than On

With all the shenanigans going on at the troubled LA Galaxy organization, there have also been stirrings this week surrounding the Colorado Rapids. Rumors of coaching changes at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, new players coming in, supporters clubs airing their grievances with the organization. Click to continue reading...

Bye Bye Bruno; Rapids Screwed by The Crew

10
He didn't come, he didn't see and he certainly didn't conquer. The Colorado Rapids today traded college midfielder, Bruno Guarda, to FC Dallas. In return, they received multiple draft picks and an undisclosed allocation. The Rapids picked up Guarda in the MLS lottery last week and the much vaunted SMU star immediately became the subject of many approaches from other teams. Click to continue reading...

The Value of Hard Work; McBride for Colorado?

2
The value of hard work and the value of a deep roster. A week may be a long time in politics, as they say. A few weeks may actually be a very short time in professional sport. Last month wasn't looking great for two very skillful players on the Colorado Rapids team. At the beginning of July, both Mehdi Ballouchy and Herculez Gomez were wondering whether they would be able to find their way back into the starting XI. Click to continue reading...

VI Questions with Coach Clavijo: Half Full/Half Empty?

1
Coach Clavijo and the Rapids had a frustrating tie against Dallas with Dallas gifted a goal from the referee and wild play on each side of the field. Clavijo answers some questions about the emotional roller coaster of a 2-2... Click to continue reading...

Rapids Tie It Up Down Texas Way

0
The facts of this game? The Colorado Rapids managed a 2-2 draw, again showing that this is not a team that gives up easily, having gone down 2-1. In so doing, the Rapids extended their unbeaten run to three games in the MLS. The truth is that our attacking play was so much better than that of FC Dallas that we should have won this game. Rapids at FC Dallas

1
The Colorado Rapids are in Frisco, Texas today to play FC Dallas. Dallas has 2 wins and 3 ties in their last 10 games. While they're struggled for points during this stretch they've only been shut out once, a 1-0 loss at New York. Can the Rapids shut them out this time around?

The only injuries with the Rapids worth noting at this time, sorry Justin, are Mike Petke, Tom McManus and all-star Christian Gomez.

Rapids Confident Ahead of Texas Trip; Dalby Signs

3
There's a growing sense that the Colorado Rapids may be able to take advantage of a weakened Dallas side this weekend and further consolidate the good momentum which started with the July 4 victory against the New York Red Bulls. Contrary to the doubters out there, last weekend's 1-1 draw with San Jose was a point well won. Click to continue reading...

Pablo Ponders as Rapids Go West

2
Pablo Mastroeni, the veteran defensive midfielder and longtime face of the Colorado Rapids, may want to leave Denver and seek to further his career in Europe before his contract expires in December. He is reported to be considering that option, according to today's Denver Post (link below). Click to continue reading...

VI Questions with Coach Clavijo: Firecracker of a Victory!

Cynicism is OK But You Can't Win Without Goals

1
The relatively inexperienced midfield for the Colorado Rapids may have to inject a little more cynicism into its play to avoid making the kinds of mistakes that saw the team allow a similarly inexperienced Columbus player last week waltz through it and score the winning goal. Goalkeeper, Bouna Coundoul, said in this week's radio show, "From The Pitch", that Emmanuel Ekpo should have been fouled further up the field. Click to continue reading...

One Mistake Is All It Takes

1
One mistake and it ended up costing us the game. The Colorado Rapids competed well with the Columbus Crew for the entirety of this match but where were the midfield and defense to stop Emmanuel Ekpo's marauding run in the 70th minute? The young Nigerian basically walked through the Rapids' back line and midfield before unleashing a powerful shot that Bouna Coundoul could only parry into the net. Click to continue reading...

Will He, Won't He?

2
Bouna Coundoul, the long-absent Bouna, is now back in Denver and training hard with his Colorado Rapids teammates. Does he walk straight back into the team after a month of not playing or will he wait on the sidelines a tad longer? We know that coach, Fernando Clavijo, has not been best pleased with his Senegal star for not being in contact during his time with the national team there. Click to continue reading...

Still Not The Finished Article

0
The Colorado Rapids once again let themselves down in front of goal, failing to finish off any number of chances as they struggled to a scoreless draw against the Houston Dynamo last night. Many of those chances did fall to Omar Cummings but the Jamaican is finding it tough to net right now and he probably fears his starting place is under threat, only helping him to get more anxious in front of goal. Murph & Cooke Staying Put

Houston, You May Have a Problem

2
OK, bit of a corny headline but there is a good opportunity for the Rapids to vent all their frustrations of the past two weeks on the Dynamo this weekend. Coach, Fernando Clavijo, is very confident he will have the squad to roll the Texans over. Back comes a very solid defense with Ugo Ihemelu returning from pseudo international duty with Canada and Facundo Erpen returning from suspension. Click to continue reading...

CVI Questions with Coach Clavijo: Drama in La La Land

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid?

2
Let's hope there are stout hearts in those young Colorado Rapids players and that they don't get so afraid at BMO Field come Saturday evening. Those crazy Canadian fans, the difficult surface, questionable refereeing decisions. All these will no doubt come into play on Saturday against Toronto and the inexperienced players could be the ones tested the most. Click to continue reading...

It's Not Really Bouna Time Right Now

5
Senegal scratched to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Gambia at the weekend in their latest World Cup qualifying game and the Rapids' Bouna Coundoul was nowhere to be seen. Nobody could have expected Bouna to walk into the national team this time around but what has made it worse is that veteran goalkeeper, Tony Sylva, has now been chosen to captain the side. Rapids Fly Off Into Galaxy; Where is Bouna?

1
It was another perfect morning at Dick's Sporting Goods Park as the Rapids boys went through their paces ahead of this weekend's match before flying off to LA this afternoon. The plane will be without Pablo Mastroeni whose recent strong play has rightly earned him a call-up to the national team. Click to continue reading...

Mastroeni Plays Against Spain as US Downed 1-0

0
Colorado Rapids' captain, Pablo Mastroeni, got onto the field for about five minutes yesterday in the US game against Spain in Santander. I'm glad he did because it could have felt like an even longer flight over to Europe if he had stayed completely on the bench. Mastroeni, who has been strong for the Rapids in recent games, played a full 90 against Dallas last week before flying to Spain on Monday. Click to continue reading...

Rapids Acquire San Jose Goalie as Bouna Backup

2
I know I'm behind the news somewhat but wanted to post a quick comment on the trade of Kelly Gray and Jovan Kirovski for the San Jose goalkeeper, Preston Burpo. This seems like a solid move on the part of the Rapids. Kirovski, the leading scorer last season, could not find his way back into the team and was some way down the pecking order. No Training and African Journey

0
My apologies but I wasn't able to get to training this week to pick up on the mood in the camp and get a feel of what Fernando Clavijo is planning for this weekend. My guess is that it seems unlikely there will be much change in the line-up given last weekend's dominant performance against DC United. Click to continue reading...

Rapids Send United Packing in Dominant Display

0
That's more like it. Everyone got very excited about the thrashing of the LA Galaxy on opening day but this victory over DC United was maybe as dominant and impressive. The midfield largely ran the show with DC's dangerman, Gallardo, barely featuring. I can't really remember Bouna having to make a real save because the defense marshalled things so well and the attacking play was frequently exciting to watch. Click to continue reading...

Easy Rider and a 3-4-1-2 Formation

1
Maybe this is what Colorado Rapids' coach, Fernando Clavijo, thinks to himself when he's on the seat of his Harley approaching Estes Park. A Bad Day at The Office as Seniors Go AWOL

0
Colorado Rapids' coach, Fernando Clavijo, said he had fully expected the youngsters to crash in a game eventually after such a successful start to the season. He just didn't expect his senior players to all crash at the same time in the same game. Coach Clavijo told me after the Reserves game this morning that yesterday's defeat to San Jose was a bad day at the office. Click to continue reading...

Watch Out San Jose - Rapidfire Approaching

1
The San Jose Earthquakes have very dangerous forwards in Kamara and Glinton but, by the time they shoot at Bouna, their team may already be three down. I say this not in some marketing bravura but because Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo will be fielding a very attacking formation come the game Saturday night. Click to continue reading...

Rapids Sign McManus, Waive Gargan

1
The Colorado Rapids eventually signed Scottish striker, Tom McManus, though nobody can seem to decide if he is called Tom or Tam. Anyway, the ex-Hibernian player is now officially a player at DSG Park although he has been with the team since the preseason trip to London. In more surprising news, the team waived defender Dan Gargan. Click to continue reading...

Rapids Fall to Late Kansas Winner

0
I was just thinking about writing how as important it would be for the Rapids to get a great draw on the road as it was to stuff the Galaxy last week when up pops the Wizards substitute and scores the winner in the 86th. Very disappointing, especially after we had fought back from 2-0 down to tie the game. Click to continue reading...

Rapids' Injury Updates; Established Players to Fight for Places

0
The good news is that many of the injuries of the Colorado Rapids players are healing in time for the game this weekend against Kansas City. The bad news, for them anyway, is that it won't be that easy to regain their places. In reality, the performances of the younger players in the demolition of the Galaxy at the weekend give Fernando Clavijo a better dilemma than most. Click to continue reading...
