USA 1, Cuba 0: The Day After

1

It wasn't pretty, nor was it a blowout, but much like its World Cup qualifying win against Guatemala, the U.S. men's national team did just enough to escape a road game with a win and valuable three points after Saturday night's 1-0 win against Cuba.

Monday's European dispatch

1

Each Monday, we'll check in overseas to see how our two English teams and American players abroad have fared. It's especially interesting on Europe's frenetic answer to Labor Day, Transfer Deadline Day (you could also opt for The Guardian's aristocratic humor for your up-to-the-minute coverage):

EVERTON: Ouch.

Onyewu: I Deal With Reality

6
Standard Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu, seeming to be completely disgusted with the transfer process, told US reporters in Guatemala that "I only want to live in reality, and the reality of the situation is that I play for Standard. I enjoy it and what happens, happens."

Meanwhile, the buzz coming from cognoscenti back in the States links Onyewu to Serie A side Catania, which is still looking to replace top defender Juan Manuel Vargas after selling him to Fiorentina. Click to continue reading...

Bob Bradley's Tactics

3

Under Bob Bradley the USMNT has become reliant on set pieces for scoring and quite possibly more dependent on its center backs than any top 50 national team/photo from US Soccer

For all the criticisms of Bob Bradley's tactics by commentators including myself, the continued success rate the United States enjoys on set pieces is remarkable.

US Secure Massive Three Points; Mexico Escapes

2

Photo from Reuters

Mexico was fortunate to escape with a 2-1 win at Azteca tonight over a Honduran side filled with quality. Honduras played some quality football and was unfortunate not to secure at minimum a point as Mexico despite being out thought and flustered much of the night used two Pavel Pardo goals in a three minute span late in the match to escape.

USA men survive nasty battle in Guatemala

9
Last night's World Cup qualifier in Guatemala was what you might call a "TV Screamer" in that, I was practically hoarse from screaming at my television at matches end.

For starters, ESPN had a baseball game on instead of the match as advertised which sent me over the top. The insufferable baseball game finally ended at about 10 minutes in to the first half. Click to continue reading...

World Cup Qualifier Thoughts

The United States Men's National Team got off to a great start in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday night, with Bob Bradley's squad marching into Guatemala and emerging with a 1-0 victory. It was the first time in history that the US earned a win in a WC qualifier on Guatemalan soil. Captain Carlos Bocanegra was the hero, heading home a DaMarcus Beasley corner kick in the 69th minute to give the Nats all they would need. Click to continue reading...

Guatemala your national team is a disgrace

Don't blog angry. Don't ever blog angry. Sorry, but I have to break this cardinal rule in the middle of the night. Sue me. Sitting on my couch it's hard to recall a time where I was as infuriated watching a game as tonight's USMNT 1-0 victory over the no-class, dirtbags on the Guatemala national team. Fulham's Forgotten Men

21
As a supported from America, I've always had a soft spot for Fulham. With Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, and Kasey Keller all previously (or currently) on their roster, Fulham is a squad that has always trusted and depended on American players.

McBride was Fulham's evergreen captain - the man who was always there to score that crucial goal. Click to continue reading...
