Palermo’s heir?

3
Lucas Viatri had hardly had a sniff of anything in the superclásico, but popped up in the 60th minute to decide the match all the same in a manner the great Martín Palermo, looking on, would have been proud of. The goal came after Boca had been reduced to ten men through the sending-off of [...] Click to continue reading...

Copa Sudamericana: Defensor Sporting 1 - 2 River Plate

4
You could tell it wasn't the league campaign, because River Plate, having crossed the estuary the club took its name from to Montevideo, actually won a match, and it was thanks to two goals from a rather unexpected source. Sebastián Abreu's transfer back to River from Israel only went through on Wednesday, clearing him to [. Click to continue reading...

Where are the champions?

1
The fallout from the clásico against San Lorenzo on Sunday is beginning to die down in Núñez now, after two days of bitter attacks on Cuervo defender Sebastián Méndez for his horrific attempt to snap Radamel Falcao García in two at the end of the match. Now, though, manager Diego Simeone has to look forward to the [. Click to continue reading...

Olympic Football Tournament: Argentina 2 - 0 Serbia

7
Argentina rounded off their Olympic Football Tournament group campaign with an academic defeat of Serbia on Wednesday. Having already qualified for the quarter-finals, Sergio Batista rested Juan Román Riquelme, Javier Mascherano and (to the disappointment of a Chinese crowd who'd turned up specially to see him) Lionel Messi, and was rewarded with a 2-0 win [. South America Beckons For Olympic Gold As Brazil and Argentina Stroll Through To Quarters

1

Brazil are second-favourites to win the Gold medal in the men's football at the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing after they eased to the top of the standings in Group C. Victories in their three group matches meant they advanced to the quarter-finals in a storming fashion. The 2007 South American Youth Championship victors eased past the hosts China 3-0 in their final match and they will now face Cameroon, who finished runners-up in Group D behind Italy.

River Plate: 2 - Olimpo: 1 - Torneo Clausura 2008

2
River Plate defeated Olimpo by 2-1 for the eighteenth round of the Torneo Clausura 2008. Due to a combination of both this and Estudiantes' goal-less draw with Colon, "los Millonarios" were able to lift their 33rd Argentine League trophy.

River played an overall good game. Diego Simeone's team was able to go up 1-0 in the first half, after Diego Buonanotte successfully scored a previously-prepared set-piece.

Clausura ‘08: Round 18 goals

1
There were only 19 goals in the Primera A this weekend, but a lot of them were vital ones, and none more so than Facundo Sava's to help Racing avoid direct relegation, Diego Buonanotte's brace which gave River Plate the title, or Gonzalo Bergessio's hat-trick to hand San Lorenzo qualification for the Copa Sudamericana at [. Clausura ‘08: Round 18 scores and scorers

2
With one match remaining of the Torneo Clausura 2008, two issues at least are cleared up: River Plate are champions thanks to two goals from Diego Buonanotte, and San Lorenzo are in the Copa Sudamericana courtesy of a Gonzalo Bergessio hat-trick. Racing's defeat of Huracán means they won't be going down automatically, and thanks to [. Click to continue reading...

¡River Campeón!

1
It took a lot of digging deep in Sunday's match against a spirited and highly motivated Olimpo, but after four long years River Plate are finally able to call themselves champions of Argentina again. Thanks to a stellar performance from young gun Diego Buonanotte, Diego Simeone's side claimed the club's 33rd professional league title, beating the [. Click to continue reading...

San Lorenzo win through

1
With LDU Quito already lying in wait in the quarter-final after knocking out Estudiantes on Tuesday night, River Plate and San Lorenzo met in the Monumental to decide their all-Argentine last sixteen tie and, in a phenomenal match, it was San Lorenzo, the only one of Argentina's 'Big Five' never to have won the Copa [. The wait is over

2
It's been four years since Boca Juniors last beat River Plate in La Bombonera, during which time their sole consolation has been that River haven't won any trophies and they have done. On Sunday, though, with River arriving in La Boca on top of the league table, the run came to an end thanks to [.. Click to continue reading...

Boca Juniors vs. River Plate: the teams

6
Apologies for the lack of coverage of Saturday's matches - my phone line (and with it my broadband) crashed on Saturday morning and was only fixed on Sunday - but the first competitive superclásico of 2008 is now just a few hours away. I type during the first few minutes of the Milan derby, but the [. Click to continue reading...

Buen-anotte

River Plate will be going into next weekend's superclásico looking down on Boca Juniors from the top of the Primera A table, after they returned to winning ways against Argentinos Juniors thanks to a spectacular performance from their teenage wunderkid Diego Buonanotte. River flow on

0
River Plate became the fourth Argentine club in the last 16 of the 2008 Copa Libertadores on Thursday night thanks to an easy home win over Peru's San Martín de Porres in the Monumental. Any result would have done for River as long as they didn't lose by more than one goal, but once Sebastián [.. Click to continue reading...

Coasting at the top

1
When River Plate visited Tigre during the Clausura, the result was a 4-1 win for the hosts that pushed Daniel Passarella a little bit closer to the exit door at River. Today was the rematch, and the Millonarios showed just what a difference Diego Simeone is making at the club; they didn't play particularly well [. Click to continue reading...

Apertura ‘07: Round 14 goals

3
Apologies for not putting these up sooner - the internet café I was in in Salamanca yesterday didn't have the necessary plugins for me to able to watch the video myself and thus give the running order. Anyway: Here, courtesy of TN, are 20 of the 21 goals from the fourteenth round of matches in the Apertura. Colón [...] Click to continue reading...

The run continues

1
So the pattern of River Plate's season goes on - as does their recent record against their most hated rivals. Battered 4-1 away by Argentinos in midweek, they played the champions of South America off the pitch back in the Monumental on Sunday, to such a convincing extent that the crowd (and the fans I [...] Click to continue reading...
