Champions League Matchday 5 In Words

"Panathinaikos' win is absolutely deserved. People may say they were lucky but I don't agree. After that performance we don't deserve to go through. We must be angry with ourselves."
Jose Mourinho surprisingly philosophical over Inter Milan's defeat to Panathinaikos, the first in their European campaign this season. Click to continue reading...

5 Things We Learned From Matchday 5: Wednesday Edition.

1
The Cinderellas are in group B, not A. Cluj was the underdog-come-good story to start out the campaign, and deservedly so. They beat Roma - though who didn't earlier in the season - and nil-niled (yes, that's a verb) with a then high-flying Chelsea team. Now, however, they've come back down to earth, and will be [. Bordeaux 1 - 1 Chelsea: Nicolas Anelka Prevents Another Reformation

0
I don't think they show matches like tonight's game between Bordeaux and Chelsea to the choir of absolutely self-assured angels who sing "The Chommmm-pyons!!" at the end of every Heineken commercial, because it takes unquestioning faith in the established order to sing "The Chommmm-pyons! Rant Box: Chelsea v Bordeaux

0

Chelsea. Bordeaux. France. Champions League. Girls in electric yellow.

Shall I say anymore? Why yes, of course.

After that debacle over the weekend at home to Newcastle you know, the one where we did everything but score we need a decisive performance. If that's not enough, we're coming off that Roma display and thus need, not want, a win here.

Blending Sincerity with Mind Games

0

Oh Jean-mimi. How you love to find new ways to make people hate you (outside of Lyon, that is).

This morning, in a rather long interview in which Jean-Michel Aulas touched upon various subjects such as Laurent Blanc, the title race, and Hatem Ben Arfa, he also spoke about his regrets at being unable to sign Yoann Gourcuff two years ago from Rennes.

Cheik Diabaté, the 20-year-old Malian forward, on loan from Bordeaux is enjoying a great amount of success this season at Ligue 2 side AC Ajaccio. He has seven goals so far in 2008 and has guided the club to a 9th place standing in the table after 14 matches.

4 seeds are the new 3 seeds; or, Transylvanians, Cypriots & Belarusians are legit. Roma Fights Back Putting Bordeaux To The Sword

0
Yoann Gourcuff's first-half strike gave Laurent Blanc's side the lead, but Mirko Vucinic brought the visitors level midway through the second half, before Julio Baptista struck twice in the final quarter of the match to revive Giallorossi Champions League ambitions. Roma’s Birthday Duo

From the Curious Statistic Department: Roma beat Bordeaux 3-1 in France on the back of second half goals from Mirko Vucinic and Julio Baptista (brace), who both happened to be celebrating their birthdays (25th & 27th, respectively). Pre-teen joins Chelsea

I bet The Voyeur is pissed.

Chelsea scout Guy Hillion confirmed that the club inked 12-year-old Jeremy Boga from ASPTT Marseille.

The Blues beat out Lyon, Bordeaux and big Marseille for the young one's signature. More to the point, his father has been working in London for a couple of years, leading to Boga's decision to join Chelsea.

UEFA to discuss Euro hosts Poland and Ukraine

2
European soccer's governing body UEFA is expected to stand by its decision to appoint Poland and Ukraine as hosts of Euro 2012 on Friday despite a lack of progress in preparations to stage the tournament. UEFA's executive committee is also due to endorse an expansion of the European Championship finals to 24 teams from 16 at its two-day meeting starting on Thursday in Bordeaux, despite criticism that it could dilute the quality of the event.
