Argentina’s new boss: who will it be?

1
Julio Grondona returns, on Monday, from a FIFA congress in Zurich. When he flew out to Switzerland last week he told the press that the 27th, when he returned, would be the day on which he would be announcing the new manager of the Argentine senior men's national team. The commonly held view is that [. Click to continue reading...

Basile out: why, how, and who next?

0
As Alfio Basile was resigning as Argentina manager last night, I was preparing to email an article to Soccernet about the pressure he was under. A complete re-write ensued (at one o'clock in the bloody morning with work the following day - thanks, Coco!), and you can read the result now, taking in Basile's resignation [. Basile resigns

1
Breaking news from the AFA: Alfio Basile has met with AFA bigwigs, and TN are reporting as I type that he's resigned from his post in charge of the selección. Olympic coach Sergio Batista, River Plate manager Diego Simeone, and San Lorenzo boss Miguel Angel Russo are the early favourites to replace him. Click to continue reading...

World Cup qualifying: self-examinations, and my own two centavos

1
On Thursday, the Argentine squad went their separate ways as they returned to club duty following Wednesday night's pathetic surrender to neighbours Chile in Santiago. Speaking at Ezeiza airport before flying back to Barcelona, Lionel Messi own up to his own mistakes frankly, whilst Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze did likewise. Click to continue reading...

World Cup 2010: Chile 1 - 0 Argentina

13
After finally ending a run of six matches without defeat in a 2-1 win over Uruguay on Saturday, Argentina followed it up on Wednesday night by losing to trans-Andean neighbours Chile for the first time ever in a competitive match. It was a win Marcelo Bielsa's team thoroughly deserved, and followed on from Paraguay's one-goal [. Click to continue reading...

Chile vs. Argentina - the possibilities

6
As ever, Coco Basile won't be revealing his starting XI until very shortly before kick off in Santiago, but with Juan Román Riquelme having rejoined the Boca Juniors squad to prepare for Sunday's superclásico following his suspension and with Carlos Tevez also ruled out, it's thought after the team's final training session at Ezeiza on [. Sand gets the call

1
With Messers Tevez and Riquelme suspended, and Sergio Agüero injured, Barcelona's Lionel Messi will be the only one of Argentina's 'fantastic four' (the phrase is Olé's and not, I would like to impress upon you, my own) who will feature against Chile in Santiago on Wednesday night. Agüero, who only picked up a minor knock [. Click to continue reading...

World Cup 2010 qualifiers: Argentina 2 - 1 Uruguay: the goals

3
In my absence, Argentina finally returned to winning ways after six matches of forgetting what it felt like. In the Monumental, in the clásico against their ancient cross-river rivals Uruguay, Alfio Basile's side finally looked like a team again. It took seven minutes of the first half - between the fifth, when Lionel Messi opened [. Click to continue reading...

Preparations for Argentina vs. Uruguay

4
Friday is the last full day of training for Argentina's squad ahead of the World Cup qualifying clásico against Uruguay in the Monumental on Saturday. It's been a disrupted week for Alfio Basile's men but on Thursday, Juan Román Riquelme returned to training with the squad. Things aren't all quite to plan so far, though - [. The international sniping begins

0
Argentina play Uruguay in the Monumental on Saturday and whilst things are rarely friendly between two of the oldest rivals in international football, the sniping has come from an unexpected angle on Tuesday: Julio César Cáceres. That's Julio César Cáceres of Paraguay. Obviously seeking to crank up the pressure on a team currently trailing in [. Click to continue reading...

National news

1
Two pieces of news regarding Argentine selecciones today, both of which took place on Sunday whilst the league action was going on. In the Brazil 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup, Argentina drew 2-2 against Ukraine in a frantic end to a highly entertaining match which saw all the goals come in the closing minutes (in spite [. Tough at the top for Dunga and Basile

0
Don't say it too loudly if you're on holiday in either country, but at the moment the national football teams of great rivals Brazil and Argentina have a little more in common than they'd like to admit. The most recent round of qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup featured a few surprises, but none more so than disappointing draws on Wednesday night for both South American giants. Tough at the top for Basile and Dunga

0
Starting this month, I'm writing for ESPN's Soccernet on football across South America. These articles won't always include Argentine football, of course, but when they do I'll let you know here. This week the subject under the microscope is why the pressure of managing one of the world's top international sides is being cranked up [. Click to continue reading...

Heinze Gone From Albiceleste?

1
Gabriel Heinze's days with the Argentine national team could be numbered after his fallout with Alfio Basile. His dreadful performance against Paraguay, his horrid own goal and his reaction to be subbed in favor of Getafe's Daniel Díaz will most likely leave him out of the upcoming call up that will occur in October. World Cup 2010: Peru 1 - 1 Argentina

13
Esteban Cambiasso had the goal and, without actually impressing anyone, Argentina were putting to bed the run of six matches without a win that's seen them slip from first to fourth in the South American qualification table for South Africa 2010. A poor performance but the result was still as expected. Click to continue reading...

Not the best preparation

1
Argentina travelled to Lima on Monday, where they're now preparaing to take on Peru on Wednesday night. All is not well, however, for Alfio Basile's side. Following Carlos Tevez's second red card in three matches for the selección, they'll have to get ready for Peru with one forward fewer of Basile's squad. Click to continue reading...

World Cup 2010: Argentina 1 - 1 Paraguay

3
It was second versus first in the Estadio Monumental on Saturday afternoon, as Argentina hosted leaders Paraguay in the South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. Argentina squad vs. Paraguay & Peru

The Argentina squad for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers against Paraguay in Buenos Aires, and Peru in Lima, has been almost finalised prior to the weekend's domestic action in Argentina, after which three Boca Juniors players will be added to the list. Nothing to report, and a goal video

2
It's getting on for 2am and the international friendly between Belarus and Argentina on Wednesday evening was so 'friendly' that neither side bothered to trouble the opposing goalkeeper unduly, by all reports. I can't even offer my own opinions on the matter because like the patriotic idiot I am, I was wasting my evening watching [. Click to continue reading...

The Argentine friendly I missed

0

So, maybe I forgot or just didn't do my homework but last night Argentina played Belarus in Minsk in a friendly.  Well, I really didn't miss much. Despite the presence of first team regulars Tevez, Burdisso, Cambiasso and Zanetti the albicelestes could not take advantage. The score ended up being 0-0 with few chances at goal by Argentina.

Argentina starting XI vs. Belarus, 20th August 2008

To avoid any possible confusion should anyone be typing in terms to search engines looking for Argentine national team news today, I'll start by pointing out that this has nothing at all to do with the Olympic Football Tournament. Argentina squad vs. Belarus, and Dátolo to Flu?

12
As if to prove that he can put together quite a handy team without including the Olympic-bound Lionel Messi, Juan Román Riquelme, Sergio Agüero et al, Alfio Basile has named the Argentina squad to face Belarus in a friendly in Minsk, two weeks from today (Weds). There are a couple of surprises in the all-Europe [. Click to continue reading...

What’s the Croatian for ‘Oriundi’?

0
A missed opportunity for Argentina? Perhaps. Under Alfio Basile, one or two of the domestic league's more impressive performers have been given the chance to represent their country alongside their more well-known (or perhaps not, in the cases of the Juans; Román Riquelme and Sebastián Verón) Europe-based countrymen. Brazil 0 - 0 Argentina

10
Brazil and Argentina convened for their first meeting of the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa on Wednesday night, with Argentina aware that a win would take them back to joint top of the table alongside Paraguay, after the Guaraní fell to a shock 4-2 defeat to Bolivia in La Paz [. Argentina starting XI vs. Brazil

12
Alfio Basile has named Argentina's starting lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Brazil in Belo Horizonte, and it includes both Juan Román Riquelme and Lionel Messi. ¡Que Lío!

In the buildup to Wednesday night's South American clásico between Brazil and Argentina in Belo Horizonte for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers, the Argentina camp has been rocked by suggestions of a division in the squad. Argentina 1 - 1 Ecuador

Following the experimentation of the North American friendlies last week, it was back to serious business for the selección on Sunday night, with a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador which was expected to be a mere warm up for the midweek clash away to Brazil. U.S.A. 0 - 0 Argentina

A capacity crowd at Giants Stadium in New York were treated to an utterly boring scoreless draw between the United States and Argentina on Sunday night which proved, if nothing else, that there's only so much managers can learn from friendlies. Argentina 4 - 1 Mexico

It wasn't all doom and gloom for Argentine representatives against foreign opposition on Wednesday night.
